The worst corner ever? Charlie Adam for Stoke vs Burnley | OneFootball

In the 2010/11 Premier League season, Charlie Adam was absolutely brilliant for Blackpool.

The Scottish midfielder was unable to keep the team in the English top-flight, but his performances were praised to the rafters.

Legendary Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson couldn’t speak highly enough of him following Blackpool’s 3-2 defeat to the Red Devils in January 2011.

Adam assisted both of the Seasiders’ goals and Fergie stated after the game that each of the Scotsman’s corners were worth £10 million.

“The first half we were battered, and we couldn’t handle Charlie Adam,” Ferguson, per Goal, said. “His corner kicks are worth £10m.”

The compliment from one of the sport’s most distinguished figures was made to look beautifully ironic just over six years later, though.

While Adam was in the fifth year of his spell at Stoke City after a disappointing season at Liverpool, he produced what is perhaps the worst corner kick ever seen in a professional setting.

In a match against Burnley, the current captain of Dundee somehow managed to give away a free-kick while attempting to take a corner.

How did he manage it? Well, Adam slipped over as he approached the ball and then handled it in a sequence of events befitting of a Monty Python sketch.

That is just marvellous and it gets better with every single replay.

Fergie may have valued Adam’s corners in 2011 at £10 million a pop, but his 2017 attempt would have been a complete rip-off even if it was free.

The former Scotland international called time on his Stoke career in 2019 and joined Championship outfit Reading.

Adam didn’t exactly set the world alight with the Royals, so he returned to the country of his birth in 2020.

The former Scotland international certainly hasn’t been electric at Dundee, though, despite being handed the captain’s armband.

Adam is yet to score a goal in league action this season and it wouldn’t be much of a surprise if he opts to hang up his boots for good in the near future.
