Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Winks comes clean regarding wonder goal

According to The Times, Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Winks has made a startling admission about his wonder strike against Ludogorets in the Europa League yesterday.

The goal was the highlight in a 4-0 romp for the Premier League table-toppers. However, the midfielder was looking to make a pass and not score. Winks picked up the ball close to the touchline and appeared to spot the Ludogorets goalkeeper off his line. He then unleashed a 54-yard shot which sailed in.

It was clear to both him and the players on the pitch that the strike was a fortunate overhit that went just right. It was the player’s first goal in two years for the club and they don’t come in more spectacular fashion.

“I’d love to sit here and say that I did, but I’ve got to be honest and say no.”

Winks admitted that he was trying to find Gareth Bale who was trying to shake off his marker. It is a good thing the ball went in, the pass otherwise was some way off.

Jose Mourinho however believes the midfielder should not have been so modest. He went on to add that Winks should try to claim a goal of such majesty.

While all is well that ends well, the goal is a product of the midfielder’s forward-thinking. The fact that he was eyeing the pass that would have put Bale through is in itself commendable.

Having fallen down the pecking order this season, the goal will have done Winks’ confidence good. The 24-year-old has featured just once in Spurs’ four Premier League matches since October, that too coming on as a substitute against West Ham United.
