FC Barcelona and its players have ended up raising questions about themselves at the worst possible time. After their most recent draw against Celta Vigo, La Blaugrana have ended up completely blowing the lead they had in La Liga. Unfortunately, many factors contributed to this Barcelona collapse.
Despite leading 2-0 in the game, the final result saw Hansi Flick’s side draw this match 2-2. With just one point to show for themselves, this match feels much more like a defeat than it does a stalemate. What makes matters even worse is the kind of performance some players ended up giving in this encounter.
For many, one of the most controversial decisions that Hansi Flick ended up making in this match came near the end of the game. Despite winning 2-0 and needing some control in the game, as highlighted by SPORT, Flick’s decision to take off both Pedri and Gavi ended up being detrimental, especially with Frenkie de Jong coming on instead.
After the game, the Dutchman’s performance saw many people on social media calling for him to leave the club or questioning his presence there. As SPORT pointed out, some of the messages out on the internet were calling him things like ‘The Wandering Dutchman’ and ‘Get out of my team’.
Despite being a captain for the team, the Dutchman completely crumbled near the end. Having been dispossessed twice, losing most duels that he contested, and his failure to replicate the control that Gavi and Pedri were so effectively showcasing ended up being crucial elements in what led to Barça’s collapse.
Frenkie de Jong remains a polarizing figure at Barcelona, and this kind of performance definitely does not help his case. Unfortunately, it does not matter now if it was De Jong’s fault entirely, Jules Kounde’s errors, or Marc Casado’s unnecessary red card that led to this result, and the team must look forward to the next chance.
