The victims of the Flamengo training ground fire have been identified | OneFootball

Friday morning’s fire in the Flamengo district in the western zone of Rio de Janeiro killed 10 members of the Flamengo youth side. Three others were wounded.

The fire occurred at the famed Vulture’s Nest in a temporary dormitory that was built on what was originally planned to be a parking lot.

Reports from Brazil state the dorms were to be torn down once the players moved into a new dorm.

“The fire was in my room. The air conditioner caught fire, and I ran out,” said 15-year-old Flamengo player Felipe Cardoso.

“I have only God to thank for managing to wake up and escape death. May God comfort my brothers.”

With the exception of Rykelmo de Souza Viana, 17, all those who lost their lives played for the Flamengo U-15 side.

Goalkeeper Christian Esmério, 15, was one of Flamengo’s brightest prospects and had been called up multiple times to Brazil’s youth national sides.

Cauan Emanuel Gomes, Francisco Diogo Bento Alves, and Jhonatan Cruz Ventura have all been hospitalised.

Though Gomes and Alves are expected to survive, Ventura is in very serious condition with burns on 30-35 per cent of his body.
