Barcelona have long been known for their commitment to developing young talent, with rising stars like Pau Cubarsi, Gavi, and Pedri securing their long-term futures at the club.

However, while the youthful core of the squad remains a crucial part of the team’s vision, the importance of experienced leaders cannot be understated.

In Hansi Flick’s Barcelona, three veterans have emerged as absolutely untouchable: Robert Lewandowski, Inigo Martinez, and Wojciech Szczesny.

These three players, despite being the oldest members of the squad, have become indispensable pillars in the starting XI, contributing both on and off the pitch with their leadership, experience, and consistency.

They form the backbone of the team, bringing stability to a side undergoing a youthful revolution under Flick.

The keeping situation is sorted

Between the posts, Szczesny has firmly established himself as the undisputed first-choice goalkeeper. When he arrived at Barcelona, there was some uncertainty about his role, but Flick has decisively ended any debate surrounding the goalkeeping position.

The shot-stopper, known for his reflexes, composure, and ability to command the box, has been a key figure in ensuring defensive stability.

His experience at the highest level has made him a reliable presence at the back, giving the team the assurance it needs in crucial moments.

The defensive leader

Meanwhile, Martinez has experienced a resurgence under Flick. Last season, the Spanish centre-back struggled to cement a regular spot, but things have changed dramatically this term.

Now, he is an undisputed starter, playing a crucial role in the defensive structure. Flick’s tactical setup places great importance on keeping a high defensive line and catching opponents offside, a strategy that requires intelligence and discipline from the centre-backs.

Martinez has thrived in this system, using his experience and positioning to help maintain defensive organisation. His physicality, aerial presence, and ability to read the game make him a key figure in Barcelona’s backline.

The attacking lynchpin

In attack, Lewandowski remains Barcelona’s most lethal weapon. At 36 years old, the Polish striker continues to defy age with his incredible goal-scoring consistency.

His finishing ability, movement off the ball, and positional awareness make him one of the most dangerous forwards in world football. He has been on a remarkable scoring streak, netting in four consecutive matches.

Against Rayo Vallecano, he reached his 20th league goal of the season, and across all competitions, he has already accumulated an impressive 32 goals. His hunger for goals keeps Barcelona competitive, and he remains a strong contender for the Golden Boot.

Is there anyone in midfield?

Interestingly, the midfield is the only area where Flick has not relied on veteran players. However, even here, experience has started to take precedence.

While young talent Marc Casado, at 21, was initially given opportunities, Flick has increasingly placed his trust in Frenkie de Jong.

At 27, the Dutchman is not as experienced as some of the older players, but he has spent several years at the top level in both Spain and the Netherlands. His ability to dictate play and maintain control in midfield has given him the edge over younger alternatives.

The backbone of Hansi Flick

Currently, Barcelona have only four players in their squad aged 30 or older: Lewandowski, Szczesny, Martinez, and Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

However, with the German goalkeeper sidelined due to a serious injury suffered in August, the remaining three veterans have carried the responsibility of providing leadership on the pitch.

Among them, Lewandowski is the oldest at 36, followed by Szczesny at 34 and Martinez at 33. Ter Stegen, at 32, is not expected to return before the end of the season.

While Barcelona’s project is heavily focused on youth, it is these experienced figures who ensure balance within the team. Their presence is vital in guiding the next generation, offering both stability and leadership.

Under Flick, this blend of youthful energy and veteran experience has been key in shaping Barcelona’s current identity, proving that a successful team must strike the right balance between promising talent and seasoned professionals.
