Cole Palmer is collecting individual awards at a rapid rate with the Chelsea forward named the Premier League Fans’ Player of the Year for 2023-24.

Palmer’s accolade comes alongside the Premier League’s Young Player of the Season award and Chelsea’s Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season. He has been recognised following a stunning debut season at Stamford Bridge that saw the youngster lead the Premier League for goals and assists (33).

He has become just the third player to record 30 goal involvements in a Premier League season aged 21 or under. We’ve looked at the trio to have achieved the feat.

The u-21 players with 30 goal involvements in a Premier League season:

Chris Sutton – Norwich (1993/94)

Chris Sutton broke into the Norwich team on a regular basis during the early nineties before a breakout campaign in 1993/94.

Sutton scored 25 goals in the Premier League for the Canaries to finish joint-third in the race for the Golden Boot, despite a disappointing campaign that saw Norwich drop from third the previous season to 12th in the table.

Sutton added 11 assists and ended the campaign with 28 goals in all competitions, forming part of the team that eliminated Bayern Munich from the UEFA Cup and became the first English team to beat the Bavarians in Germany.

His performances saw Sutton sold for a record-breaking fee at the end of the season, as he joined Blackburn for an English record £5m. The following season, he formed a formidable partnership with Alan Shearer as Blackburn won the Premier League title.

Robbie Fowler – Liverpool (1994/95)

Robbie Fowler burst onto the scene at Liverpool with the Toxteth teenager emerging as the most exciting young forward in the Premier League.

Fowler scored 12 times in his first 13 appearances for the Reds, including five goals in a League Cup semi-final against Fulham, before breaching the 30-goal barrier in his first full campaign at senior level.

Fowler scored 25 league goals and laid on eight assists for Liverpool in 1994/95, earning himself the PFA Young Player of the Year award. He retained that accolade the following season after scoring 36 goals in all competitions the following season, the best return of his career.

He was unable to sustain those goalscoring levels across his career but remains the eighth-highest scorer in Premier League history with 163 goals.

Cole Palmer – Chelsea

Cole Palmer has become the first u-21 player to reach 30 goal involvements in a Premier League season in 29 years and the first to do so in a 38-game campaign.

Palmer signed for Chelsea from Manchester City in search of regular first-team football last summer and has been the breakthrough star of the 2023-24 campaign.

Palmer ended the season with 22 goals and 11 assists, the most goal involvements in the Premier League, and has been named in the provisional England squad that will travel to Euro 2024.

He has bordered on the ridiculous on occasion, including a hat-trick against Manchester United and a four-goal demolition of Everton at Stamford Bridge. Having joined an underperforming and expensively assembled Chelsea squad, he has been the shining light of the club’s season.
