Barcelona’s 0-1 defeat to Real Sociedad was largely attributed to a combination of factors, including a controversial VAR decision that ruled out Robert Lewandowski’s goal.

Many pointed out that Real Sociedad were much fresher than Barcelona, who seemed to struggle with energy levels. Moreover, the absence of Lamine Yamal was clearly felt.

Despite Barcelona’s impressive run of four consecutive wins at Real Sociedad’s home, achieving a historic fifth victory proved too difficult.

However, this defeat should not be seen as the end of the world simply because in football, anything can happen, and even the best teams face challenges from time to time.

Hansi Flick’s first problem

What is most frustrating for manager Hansi Flick is the team’s slow start to matches. Flick is known for not forgiving the team for entering games without the right intensity as if the first few minutes do not matter.

Against Real Sociedad, it was almost a miracle that the home team did not score within the first minute of the match. Even worse, Barcelona were lucky not to concede just seconds into the second half.

In the first half, Marc Casado made a crucial block that looked destined for goal. Early in the second half, Inaki Pena came to Barcelona’s rescue by saving a poor chip that should ideally have ended in the back of the net.

Flick’s second problem

This mindset of assuming the game will go in Barcelona’s favour simply because they are the better team has become a source of frustration for Flick. He believes this complacency is damaging, and his staff shares his concerns.

Despite the setbacks, Flick remains calm and focused. He is doing his job, and although he may not fully understand the nuances of Barcelona’s football culture or environment, he has already had his first experience with the referee, Del Cerro Grande.

Unfortunately for Flick, he has now joined the long list of Barcelona coaches who have been negatively affected by controversial decisions from this referee.
