The two most successful clubs in French football over the past few years go head to head on Sunday as Paris Saint-Germain travel to Monaco to face the current Ligue 1 champions.

The intrigue is heightened by the loan transfer of Kylian Mbappé from Monaco to PSG last summer. The 18-year-old is expected to become the second most-expensive player ever when he joins on a permanent basis at the end of this season.

It will certainly be a memorable occasion for Mbappé but he’s not the first notable player to represent both Monaco and PSG.

Here are five of the best.

Ludovic Giuly

Monaco: 1998–2004, 2011–2012

PSG: 2008–2011

The diminutive attacker really made his name during his first spell at Monaco, helping the principality club become a force in European football around the turn of the century. He also spent time at Roma and Barcelona, where he won the Champions League, before returning to France with PSG in 2008.

Youri Djorkaeff

Monaco: 1990–1995

PSG: 1995–1996

A World Cup and European Championships winner with France, Djorkaeff made the switch directly from Monaco to PSG in 1995. He won the Coupe de France with Monaco and the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup with PSG.

George Weah

Monaco: 1988–1992

PSG: 1992–1995

Another player who made his name at Monaco before moving on to the capital club, Weah is undoubtedly the greatest player to have played for both of these clubs. The Liberian won the Fifa World Player of the Year and the Ballon d’Or in 1995 due to his performances with both PSG and AC Milan, becoming the first African player to win the awards.

Marco Simone

PSG: 1997–1999

Monaco: 1999–2001, 2002-2003

Another with Milan connections, Simone is the only player on this list to have played for PSG first before moving to Monaco. He was named Ligue 1’s best player in 1998 and won trophies with both clubs.

Kylian Mbappé

Monaco: 2015-

PSG: 2017-

Still technically a Monaco player, Mbappé set the football world alight with his dynamic goalscoring performances last season. He has excelled since moving to PSG and has all the tools to become one of the best players in the world.
