Manchester City seem to be top of every list worth being top of at the moment, so it is no surprise to see that they have more financial muscle than any other club in the world.
Soccerex released their Football Finance 100 on Wednesday, which ranks the 100 clubs in the world with the most economic firepower.
The clubs are rated according to five fancy economic variables that we don’t really understand – playing assets, fixed assets, money in the bank, potential owner investment and net debt.
But they did produce some major surprises.
Most notably, Arsenal are the second most financially powerful club in the world. The study backs up the view of many fans that Arsenal have the capability to be more aggressive in their transfer spending, saying: “This position of financial strength means Arsenal could invest significantly should the hierarchy at the club choose to change their business strategy.”
English clubs dominate the upper echelons of the rankings, with five Premier League sides featuring in the top ten in the world.
Chinese Super League power Guangzhou Evergrande make an appearance in the top five, coming in at number four, just behind Paris Saint-Germain.
MLS’s LA Galaxy feature at number 14, following Zenit St Petersburg, RB Leipzig, and Barcelona, respectively.
Overall, the study noted the shift of power away from traditional European clubs.
David Wright, the Soccerex Marketing Director, said: “The results highlight how the global football landscape has shifted over the past two decades.”
