In football, they say money can buy titles. In MLS, that isn’t always the case.
The Major League Soccer Players Association (MLSPA) released their salaries on Wednesday, with Italian international Sebastian Giovinco topping the list.
The 31-year-old pulled in €6.2m, including bonuses, with defending champions Toronto FC – who failed to make the post-season this year.
His team-mate, American international Michael Bradley, came in second with a €5.7m annual salary.
Former Manchester United superstars Wayne Rooney and Zlatan Ibrahimović joined MLS mid-way through the season and have made an incredible impact on and off the pitch.
You wouldn’t believe that neither player is the top-earning Manchester United star on the list – as Bastian Schweinsteiger earned €5.4m in 2018 – making him the fourth-highest paid player in MLS.
Rooney’s €2.5m salary has the D.C. United forward at number nine on the list, while Zlatan’s €1.3m yearly earnings doesn’t even crack the top-25 (T-27th).
