Bristol City will be looking to end this season on a high once the international break passes with Nigel Pearson aiming to show what he can do with his players between now and the end of the campaign.
The Robins have a good squad but again haven’t been consistent enough this season to really make the play-off places and it seems unlikely that they will now in the remaining games.
Of course, injuries have also played their part this season with many Robins players hit by fitness problems and Dean Holden ultimately paid the price for that, lasting less than a year in the job after taking over from Lee Johnson.
Whilst we wait to see how they end the season, though, we’ve been taking a look at players that were the oldest to represent the club in their final appearance for the Robins.
With the help of transfermarkt, here’s the top ten…
Goalkeeper Niki Mäenpää made his final appearance for the Robins in a 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest last year after the season had resumed following the first lockdown.
The Finnish international left in 2020 and moved to Stoke City but did not make an appearance for the Potters and soon left them too.
Indeed, he now works for Italian side Venezia having joined in 2021, though he is yet to make a league appearance for them too as things stand.
A Finnish international, he has 26 caps for his country.
Next up on our list is Norman Hunter, with his last appearance for Bristol City actually coming against the club that he is most synonymous with; Leeds United.
Hunter sadly passed away in April 2020 and Leeds did their best to offer tributes to the former England international in the middle of the first lockdown.
he made over 500 appearances for them in the league but also had a significant spell with the Robins, making over 100 league appearances for them between 1976 and 1979.
He moved to Barnsley after that and retired from playing in 1982.
In 8th place on our list is Keith Millen whose final game for the Robins came against Wigan Athletic in a 2-0 defeat back in 2002.
Millen spent time at Brentford and Watford before moving to Bristol City where he ended his career, making over 60 league appearances for them.
Millen has since moved into coaching with him originally working for the Robins and he is now over in Sweden where he is in charge of Örgryte IS.
He moved there at the end of 2019.
Ashley Williams spent the last year of his career at Bristol City with him retiring at the end of the 19/20 season.
The hope was he’d help them into the Premier League but, of course, the Robins fell short in the play-off race with Lee Johnson losing his job.
Williams played for the likes of Everton, Stoke City and most notably Swansea City earlier on in his career, proving a regular in the Premier League during those spells.
He was also a regular for Wales, making 86 appearances for them during his international career.
Another senior pro signed by the Robins with the view to helping them up, Chris Brunt is in sixth place on this list.
Brunt spent much of his career playing for West Bromwich Albion with them a regular fixture in the Premier League for much of his spell there.
His time at the Baggies came to an end, though, and the Robins opted to bring him in as an experienced presence.
His last appearance came in a 2-0 defeat against Rotherham in December, with injury curtailing his season and paving the way for an exit via mutual consent.
He’s now a coach back at Albion.
Wade Elliott’s final appearance for the club came in a famous 8-2 win over Walsall back in 2015.
2014/15 was his final year as a player and he made 36 league appearances during that time as the Robins competed in League One.
After hanging up his boots, Elliott moved into coaching – initially at City among the development sides.
In 2018, he worked for Stoke City and their u23 team and he now finds himself back in the south-west.
He’s a coach at Cheltenham Town as they hunt promotion from League Two.
Tinnion is a certified club legend at Bristol City having spent twelve years at the club between 1993 and 2005.
He made well over 450 league appearances for the Robins during that time and also got a famous goal against Liverpool in the FA Cup.
After leaving the Robins he spent time at the likes of Aldershot, Weston-Super-Mare and Bath before retiring in 2007.
He also spent time as a player-manager briefly at City between 2004 and 2005.
Louis Carey is third on our list with him spending most of his career at City over two spells.
His first came between 1995 and 2004 where he made over 300 league appearances before a move to Coventry City in 04/05.
However, he spent just a season with the Sky Blues before heading back to Ashton Gate, where he made over 240 league appearances between 2005 and 2014.
After a short spell at Shepton Mallet he retired in 2019.
Wilbraham made over 100 league appearances for Bristol City towards the end of his career between 2014 and 2017.
The physical striker played for the likes of Stockport County, MK Dons, Crystal Palace, Norwich and Bolton in a well-travelled career whilst his last side was Rochdale with him hanging up his boots in 2020.
He has since moved into coaching with him the assistant at Shrewsbury Town where he has stood in for Steve Cotterill who has suffered with covid.
David James would likely be top of several clubs’ lists given how long he was in the game for.
James was at Bristol City towards the end of his career but only a couple of years prior he was in goal for England at the World Cup after Rob Green’s mistake in the group game versus the United States.
He played for the likes of Portsmouth, Liverpool and West Ham United during his time as a goalkeeper and is the record appearance holder in the Premier League – no surprise given how long he was playing for.
