Leon Goretzka has become undroppable for club and country.
The Bayern Munich midfielder has taken on a key role at club level and become a guaranteed starter since the departure of Thiago in the summer. Bayern, in fact, lost 4-1 to Hoffenheim in one of just two Bundesliga games he hasnât started so far this season.
But it isnât just club level where the 25-year-old has underlined his importance.
Two assists against Ukraine for Germany on Saturday evening continued a superb year for Goretzka. Germany had found themselves a goal down before the midfielder created Leroy SanĂ©âs equaliser and Timo Wernerâs first goal to make it 2-1. Werner would score again to lead Germany to a win in the Nations League.
The assists made it eight direct goal involvements â five goals and three assists â in Goretzkaâs six international appearances over the last 12 months.
Threatening more consistently in the final third is helping Goretzka thrive and he is starting to live up to the expectations of those who compared him to Germany legend Michael Ballack as he kicked off his career.
