At different times during the game the commentators pointed out that both teams have struggled with injuries. One way this shows Seattle has the MLS dynasty is the way this information was provided. LA, was given the excuse that it hasn't been able to have a stable starting 11 this season and that is the excuse for their poor form. Even though they have performed well lately, any measure of success would be their success in the League's Cup.
The Sounders have had injuries all season, but as a dynasty does, they have a next-man-up mentality. Much like the Patriots under Tom Brady and Bill Belichick, when a player, even a star player gets injured, it is up to the team to rally. Some talking heads consider that the Sounders have the deepest line-up in the league, in part by signings, but many from their developmental program.
Snyder Brunell's debut goal, making him the youngest player to score in their debut, and the dominance of young players like Vargas, Baker-Whiting, De Rosario, Levya and Kossa-Rienzi are examples of these players who have made their way up the system to be contributors to the club. This season, they have needed it. Injuries to Arriola, Frei, Yeimar, Kent, Kee-Hee, Morrris, Paulo, Ragen, Rothrock, Rusnak, Nouhou, and de la Vega have provided the adversity, yet the Sounders are one of the top teams in the west, proved they deserved to be in the Club World Cup, and were the top team after 3 games for the League's Cup.
Back-up player turned starter Danny Musovski scored his 9th and 10th goals this season to help pile on goals against the "injury depleted" Galaxy.
Even though they are in top form, there are still questions surrounding injuries and return dates for some of the players.
Ryan Kent's injury seems to be substantial, and even though it does not require surgery and he is expected to return before the end of the season, it is unclear how much time he will need to recover.
Rusnak's test results are not back yet, but it appears he will only be missing games for a short time.
Vargas has been playing in a lot of matches this year and may need to take a game or two off to recooperate and Schmetzer claimed that the revolving schedule with mid-week games might make that a possibility.
Frei dressed for the Galaxy match but did not play after returning form the concussion protocol. It is unknown if Schmetzer will have him return to the starting 11 before the next round of the League's Cup.
Paulo, whose injury was not as extensive as originally thought, began low resistance modified jogging as he works to come back to full health.
Seattle's next game is against Minnesota. Minnesota had one tie and one win in the League's Cup and did not qualify for the elimination round of the tournament. Minnesota had a 2 game home stand following the tournament, but lost to Colorado in the first game. It was the first time this season that Minnesota has lost 2 games in a row and taking on Seattle next may be a daunting task.
The Sounders' midweek game is the Leagues Cup quarterfinals against Puebla on August 20th at 8pm in Seattle. It is Puebla's second season with a new manager, Pablo Guede. In his first season, the team came in last place in Liga MX, with 1 win and 2 ties to go with their 14 losses. 4 games into the new season, they have secured a win, and performed well against New York City and Montreal in the League's Cup which allowed them the last spot in the Mexican side of the elimination round.
