It’s no secret that Real Madrid’s once-feared forward line is struggling for goals in La Liga this season.
But people may not realise just how bad Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema have been in front of goal.
Marca crunched the numbers and it turns out that Ronaldo and Benzema — yes, that Ronaldo and that Benzema — are the second-worst striker duo in all of Europe’s top leagues.
Only the strikers at Benevento have scored fewer goals than the Real Madrid partners.
Ronaldo and Benzema each have a single goal, both scored in the win over Getafe on 14 October.
Isco, Marco Asensio, Dani Ceballos, Casemiro and Gareth Bale have all scored more league goals than the Portuguese and the Frenchman.
Their poor form has affected the team, who have tallied only 22 goals so far this season, compared to 34 at the same stage last year. Zinédine Zidane’s men are currently ten points behind La Liga leaders Barcelona.
Marca also point out that this is, in fact, the worst-performing strike duo in Real Madrid history through 12 games of a season.
Never before have a pair of Real Madrid strikers scored fewer than three goals in the first 12 games. That’s probably not the type of record Ronaldo aims for when he says he wants to break all the records.
To be fair to the Portuguese, he has been in excellent goalscoring form in the Champions League. He currently leads the competition with six goals.
