Celtic being light years ahead of the rest of the Scottish top flight is a hot topic in the SMSM at the moment.
Every journo and pundit is throwing their two cents worth in. Ie “Celtic will never be caught” “the financial gulf is too big” “it’s not healthy for Scottish football”
They all have valid points of course, Celtic are light years ahead of the pack, but that’s not the point thought. Think back to the dark days of the 1990s and the turn of the century.
Rangers were in a league of their own and outspending some of the biggest clubs in Europe on transfer fees and salary’s. Minty was splashing the cash like posh spice on coke (copyright Navid Harrid)
Was there an uproar about the lack of competition? Constant Whining about Rangers superior wealth? Aye right! Quite the opposite, it was displayed as a badge of honour by Murray’s chums in the media. It was regularly splashed across the back pages gleefully rubbing it into the noses of the Celtic supporters. The succulent lamb lovers were in their element as they were hand fed scraps off minty’s table.
Regular boasting about how Rangers could field three teams such was their squad strength. Telling us in depth how Rangers annual wage bill could buy a small country, multiple cruise missiles and harrier jets amongst other things, a report even detailed how Stefan klos was earning as much at Rangers as David Beckham was at Man United.
Yes Rangers goalkeeper was earning as much as money magnet Becks. Although it would all come out in the wash later on as to why Klos and his fellow team mates were enjoying such lavishing riches.
No debates or column inches given about the state of Scottish football due to Rangers dominance or financial power. Nope the likes of Traynor, Jackson, and Leckie had their heads too far up Murray’s backside to notice anything else around them. Not that they would question anything as they were too busy revelling in Rangers success and smirking at Celtic’s misery.
Talk of Rangers smashing Celtic’s nine and row record and dreaming of European glory was all that mattered. Moonbeams were in full swing, floating pitches and turning govan into Las Vegas was the order of the day. The state of Scottish football was of no concern to David’s lap dogs.
It would of course all come crashing down and as we enjoyed jelly and ice cream they were reminiscing of the succulent lamb days, but they were long gone and all they could do was scrape the gravy off their ties. So they turned their attention to worrying about the state of Scottish football. Anything to take their minds off Celtic dominating the landscape and doing it properly and legally may I add.
Something we continue to do presently and something that looks like it will god willing, continue for the for foreseeable future. That’s the problem they have, Celtic being successful. It sticks in their craw, they care not a jot about the state of Scottish football. If they did they would have shared their concerns back in the day.
