Bologna Fixture: The Ideal Moment for Rotation?

As we march towards another set of fixtures, we are once again reminded that the next game is always the most crucial. However, there’s something different about this upcoming clash with Bologna. With a packed schedule ahead and some key players not set for international duty, this seems like the ideal moment for rotation. Bologna’s current form and squad depth suggest that rotating the squad could be beneficial, especially with tougher tests like Crystal Palace lurking on the horizon.

Bologna’s Struggles and Squad Changes

Bologna haven’t had the best of seasons so far, sitting in a difficult position—12th place in Serie A after six games with a record of 2 wins, 1 draw, and 3 losses. Their goal difference of -2 shows a side struggling to find balance both offensively and defensively. The loss of two key players in Joshua Zirkzee and Riccardo Calafiori has undoubtedly left them weaker. These two were their linchpins in attack and defence, and their departure, coupled with the exit of manager Thiago Motta, has left the club in disarray.

While they still have young forward Castro, who has managed to score three goals so far, it’s clear that Bologna are a team in transition. Castro’s individual brilliance might not be enough against a stronger, well-rotated opposition squad. Given Bologna’s form and vulnerabilities, this is likely the right game to give some of the fringe players a chance to shine while also protecting some of the starters from burnout.

A Case for Rotation: Jones and Núñez

When looking at our squad, Curtis Jones stands out as an ideal candidate for a start. He’s managed to make four appearances this season, including one in the EFL Cup and one in the Champions League. Despite his limited minutes—just 151 in total—Jones has shown promise. With no international duty on the horizon, resting the more regular midfielders makes sense, and this could be the opportunity for Jones to make his mark.

On the attacking front, Darwin Núñez has yet to start a game this season. He has played a total of 246 minutes across six appearances, with most of his time coming off the bench. His single goal in the UEFA Champions League highlights his potential, and he could be the attacking spark we need against Bologna’s fragile defence. Núñez, with his physicality and direct approach, should find joy against a backline that has conceded 11 goals in just six games.

Gakpo Deserves the Start

Then there’s Cody Gakpo, who, despite being one of our most versatile attackers, has yet to fully establish himself this season. He’s played in eight matches across all competitions, racking up a goal and an assist in the Premier League, alongside another goal in the Champions League. His 275 minutes are a clear sign that he’s been involved but not featured as much as we’d like. Gakpo’s energy and creativity could give Bologna real problems, and this could be the game where he gets the chance to lead the line or operate off the wing.

Defensive Tweaks: Quansah for Konate?

In defence, the temptation might be to rest Ibrahima Konate, who has been playing consistently and could benefit from some time on the bench. Quansah, an up-and-coming talent, could step in without too much worry given Bologna’s inconsistent attack. The rotation would not only protect Konate but also give Quansah valuable game time, allowing him to grow into the role.

Crystal Palace on the Horizon

While Bologna should not be underestimated, they are undoubtedly a weaker side compared to the challenges we’ll face in the coming weeks. Crystal Palace, for example, presents a far more difficult challenge on paper, especially with their attacking threat. Rotating now allows us to keep our key players fresh for those tougher tests. With players like Curtis Jones, Darwin Núñez, and Cody Gakpo deserving more minutes, this is the perfect opportunity to rotate the squad and come away with a comfortable result.
