Paulo Fonseca reveals why he was not appointed manager by Tottenham Hotspur

Speaking to The Telegraph (Subscription Required), Paulo Fonseca went on to reveal why Tottenham Hotspur backed out of appointing him as manager. Apparently, it was a disagreement with Fabio Paratici over the style of play as he wanted a defensive-minded manager but Fonseca refused to change his tactics.

It was indeed a bit of drama to witness Spurs fumbling in their search for a new manager. Last season, Spurs had to sack Jose Mourinho over results and overall play as Ryan Mason finished the season as interim manager. After quite some time, Spurs settled on Nuno Espirito Santo and appointed him.

Nuno Espirito Santo was appointed the new Tottenham manager

Prior to that, Spurs had quite some names on their radar with 48-year-old Fonseca one of them. The manager was recently sacked by Roma and got very close to being appointed by Spurs. It would seem that he had dived rather well into the job with discussions being held with chairman Daniel Levy and Steve Hitchen over pre-season and players.

Fonseca went on to reveal details of his collapsed move to Spurs

It was after Paratici came in that Fonseca’s move was vetoed. The former Roma manager felt that he was sounded out due to his attacking style of play but Paratici wanted someone on the conservative side. He has now revealed some details over the same.

“I have some principles. I wanted to be coach of the great teams but I want the right project and a club where the people believe in my ideas, my way to play, and this didn’t happen with the managing director. It’s what the chairman and the sporting director (Steve Hitchen) asked for. To build a team who can play attractive and offensive football and I was ready for that.”

Fonseca and Paratici’s disagreements led to the collapse

These are rather interesting revelations to learn that Paratici was the reason behind this collapse. With Nuno’s brand of football not quite playing out in the way fans have been used to, scrutiny has mounted. Now, with these statements from Fonseca further questions could be asked regarding the whole situation.
