Craig Gordon's five-year spell at Sunderland was sadly blighted by a number of serious injuries.

The Scotsman, who is now club captain at Hearts of Midlothian, signed for the Black Cats in the summer of 2007 for a fee of £9 million - which at the time was the most a British club had ever paid for a goalkeeper.

At times during his stint in the north of England, Gordon looked worth every single penny of that sizeable transfer fee and if he'd avoided injury, the Scotsman would probably be labelled a 'bargain' in the present day.

He pulled off some remarkable saves in a Sunderland shirt, with one of them in a 1-0 victory over Bolton Wanderers voted the greatest the Premier League has ever seen.

During the match in December 2010, Gordon somehow thwarted Zat Knight from close-range and on first viewing, it's hard to understand how the save was actually possible.

Knight's effort from around six yards out wasn't exactly a tame one and by the time the Sunderland 'keeper was able to make contact, the ball was behind him.

But despite that, Gordon was able to defy the laws of physics and palm the shot over the crossbar, leaving Bolton players with hands on their head.

Is it really any wonder that the save was voted the Premier League's finest when the division celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2012?

We cannot think of one in the nine years since that's topped it either.

“I don’t really quite know how I managed to do it. It was just a reaction," Gordon said when discussing the save in an interview with The Sun in 2017.

“I managed to get my left hand to it. It was just the way I connected with the ball. I managed to spin it up and over the bar from right underneath the crossbar.

“I have a trophy for it. It was to mark 20 years of the Premier League. They had a vote on some of the best saves. It was that one that won it."

You were a deserving winner, Craig.

Gordon spent two years out of the game after being released by Sunderland in 2012 and was then eventually signed by Celtic ahead of the 2014/15 season.

The 38-year-old spent six years in Glasgow before returning to boyhood club Hearts, where his impressive performances have seen him recently reinstated as Scotland's number one 'keeper.
