A dominant presence in the air can be crucial to Premier League teams at both ends of the pitch, but which players have had the most success in the air in 2024/25?

=4. Dan Burn – Newcastle United (25)

Dan Burn is an unmissable presence on the pitch and the defender’s 6ft 7in frame certainly helps his cause when contesting aerial duels. Burn has won 25 battles in the air in 2024/25, an important contribution to a Newcastle side depleted in defence.

Having seen Jamaal Lascelles and Sven Botman sidelined with ACL injuries, alongside a failed pursuit of Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi in the summer, Burn has stepped up for Eddie Howe’s side.

=4. Ibrahima Konate – Liverpool (25)

Arne Slot made a half-time change during Liverpool’s opening weekend win at Ipswich, replacing Jarell Quansah with Ibrahima Konate in a bid for greater duel dominance.

Konate impressed at Portman Road and has continued in the same vein, winning 25 aerial duels in his seven league appearances. The Frenchman’s formidable form has helped Liverpool to the best defensive record in the Premier League, having conceded just twice.

3. Kai Havertz – Arsenal (28)

Kai Havertz has passed his audition as Arsenal’s centre-forward with the German transformed from expensive misfit to integral part of Mikel Arteta’s side.

After experimentation in midfield last season, Havertz found a home – and goals – when leading the line. He’s picked up where he left off last season with six goals in 10 appearances across all competitions, while his intelligent movement and duel-winning have impressed.

2. Virgil van Dijk – Liverpool (30)

Virgil van Dijk led the Premier League for aerial duels won last season alongside Everton centre-back James Tarkowski.

The Dutch defender is again near the top of the rankings with 30 aerial duels won in 2024/25, more than any other defender. His presence has propelled Liverpool to the top of the Premier League table, having marshalled the division’s meanest defence.

1. Dominic Calvert-Lewin – Everton (35)

No centre-forward won more aerial duels than Dominic Calvert-Lewin last season and the 27-year-old has taken to the skies again in an Everton shirt in 2024/25.

The spring-heeled striker has won a whopping 35 aerial duels, more than any other Premier League player. After a summer of transfer speculation, Calvert-Lewin has started the season with two goals in seven games for Sean Dyche’s side.

His ability in the air forms part of Everton’s attacking play, whether targeting him at set-pieces or to win knockdowns in the final third.
