The mood around the camp was not one of optimism, but this victory could surely change that. Donny van de Beek was handed a start after nearly two months and the Dutchman impressed in the opening half as he even worked hard off the ball.

Man United into the Round of 16 of UCL?

Anthony Martial was handed a start but looked lacklustre and was substituted in the second half. Carrick benched Fernandes for the first time this season, and the trick worked wonders. The Portuguese playmaker looked far fresher off the bench, as did Marcus Rashford.

The ball reached Jadon Sancho on the right wing, and the Englishman bagged his first goal of the season with a thunderous strike off the post.
