We have now said arrividerci to another superb season of Serie A action and it is time to put together our star XI in a 4-3-3 formation.
Who makes it in?
In a season of strong showings from Serie A’s shot-stoppers, showed the world that even at 29, he was capable of finally making the step up to a big side in his first season in the Eternal City.
He kept more clean sheets than any other goalkeeper and was an ever present between the posts for the Aquile as they secured a long-awaited return to the Champions League, while his 77% save percentage was the league’s best for ‘keepers with at least 15 appearances.
Runner-up: Guglielmo Vicario (Empoli)
The man who captained Napoli to their first title in 33 years enjoyed a superb individual season along the way.
Exceptional defensively again and a threat overlapping with intent (he was Serie A’s only defender to create at least 45 chances from open play), he was everything that Luciano Spalletti asked of his full-backs – as evidenced by the fact that he gave him more minutes than any other player.
Runner-up: Denzel Dumfries (Inter)
When Torino sold the league’s best defender Bremer to city rivals Juventus last summer, there was great concern about how they would cope.
But the €9m they spent to replace him on Ajax stopper Schuurs proved to be a masterstroke and he filled the gap seamlessly – so much so that he is the next Granata star being linked with a big-money move away.
Runner-up: Lucas Martínez (Fiorentina)
Like Schuurs, the South Korean was a rather unheralded arrival to replace a big fan favourite when Kalidou Koulibaly departed Napoli to join Chelsea.
He was a colossus at the heart of a Napoli defence which locked down the Scudetto faster than any other side in history and again like Schuurs, it appears the Partenopei will face a fight to keep hold of him. His passing and one-on-one duel stats were top of the class for the division.
Runner-up: Chris Smalling (Roma)
Another excellent season from the Fiorentina man who has really elevated his game to the next level under Vincenzo Italiano’s instruction, invoking memories of Manuel Pasqual in the same position.
In addition, he also scored the longest range goal in Serie A for a decade when he showed his quick-thinking and accuracy by lofting a free-kick in at Verona from 57.91 metres.
Runner-up: Fabiano Parisi (Empoli)
The Frenchman struggled for consistency throughout his first three years in Turin but put everything together to produce his best individual season yet in Italy.
Despite being in a Juventus team which struggled on the park and suffered turmoil and uncertainty off it, his performances remained impressive throughout and he finished up with 11 goals and five assists.
Runner-up: Lorenzo Pellegrini (Roma)
In another outstanding season for Atalanta in which they have punched above their weight, so much so that it is almost becoming the norm, the 25-year-old was the key to it all.
Their midfield general truly does it all for La Dea, helping defensively with his inexhaustible work rate, building attacks at pace and displaying the eye for goal which saw him become the only player outside of Erling Haaland this season to score multiple hat-tricks in Europe’s top five leagues.
Runner-up: Nicolò Barella (Inter)
Yes, the Serbian star is still at Lazio and yes, he is still the main man. They have rebuffed countless approaches for the playmaker’s services throughout the years and it continues to pay off as he remains at his swashbuckling best.
He is one of just three midfielders to net at least five goals across each of the past five seasons and also hit the 100 goal involvement for Lazio in May, taking his tally to 55 goals and 45 assists since 2015, while his 17 direct involvements for the campaign were the most of any Serie A midfielder.
Runner-up: Piotr Zielinski (Napoli)
Like SMS above, Sassuolo are reaping the rewards of Berardi remaining loyal to their cause after he contributed with another big individual season, one which largely appeared to go under the radar given other forwards’ attacking exploits.
The Italian is one of just two players along with Ciro Immobile and Lautaro Martínez to hit double figures in the last four successive seasons, while only Haaland and Mo Salah managed more than his 17 direct goal involvements in 2023 for Europe’s top five leagues.
Runner-up: Felipe Anderson (Lazio)
The striking spearhead to Napoli’s Scudetto win and Serie A’s capocannoniere.
He finished the season with 26 goals to claim the crown, becoming the highest scoring African player in the league’s history in the process and added so many layers to his game that it is now almost impossible to find a weakness. He does it all.
Runner-up: Lautaro Martínez (Inter)
You don’t get bestowed a nickname like Kvaradona in Naples unless you’re something special. And he really is.
The €12m spent to bring him in from Dinamo Batumi will go down as one of the best bits of business ever in Italian football as the winger with the dazzling footwork became an instant hero – notching double figures for goals and assists in an incredible debut campaign.
Runner-up: Mattia Zaccagni (Lazio)
