A remarkable season with so many unforgettable moments and performances, it was almost impossible to pick a perfect XI from the 2020/21 campaign.
But here is the OneFootball Premier League team of the season.
A world-class goalkeeper who joined Chelsea last September and instantly turned the Blues into a defensive force again. His 24 clean sheets in all competitions have taken the west London outfit to the verge of history.
Runner-up: Emiliano Martinez (Aston Villa)
David Moyes and his recruitment staff at West Ham are enjoying a Midas Touch at the moment but no purchase has been better than Coufal this season.
The Czech defender has taken to the Premier League like a duck to water and chipped in with six assists throughout the campaign.
Runner-up: Kyle Walker (Manchester City)
The best defender in England this season, arguably the best defender in Europe – Dias has been a revelation at Manchester City and has become the bedrock upon which Pep Guardiola’s side have regained the title.
Runner-up: John Stones (Manchester City)
How to sum up Fofana’s first season at Leicester in just one sentence? He’s made the €40m Leicester paid Saint Etienne last summer look like an absolute bargain.
Runner-up: Harry Maguire (Manchester United)
Cancelo was in danger of becoming just another average Manchester City import but his transformation this term into a full-back-come-midfield creator has been revelatory.
Runner-up: Luke Shaw (Manchester United)
“I have dreamed about this player, fighting for this player at any club I was coaching at and now he is my player”. Thomas Tuchel there on the importance of Kanté for Chelsea – the world’s best defensive midfielder in 2021.
Runner-up: Ilkay Gundogan (Manchester City)
At 22 years of age, Rice has become the youngest captain in the Premier League and that really tells you all you need to know about the development of the English youngster over the past 12 months.
Runner-up: Tomáš Souček (West Ham)
Nine goals and 17 assists this season only tell part of De Bruyne’s Manchester City story. The Belgium international was inspirational at times this term, especially in the early part of the campaign when City were scraping wins against the likes of Sheffield United and Southampton.
Runner-up: Youri Tielemans (Leicester)
Perhaps the single-most important player to any club in the Premier League this season. Where would Manchester United be without Bruno? Certainly not second in the table and in a Europa League final.
Runner-up: Mason Mount (Chelsea)
Despite Tottenham flattering to deceive at times, Harry Kane has proved his eternal class by netting 23 goals this season and beating Mohamed Salah to the Golden Boot.
Runner-up: Mohamed Salah (Liverpool)
A breakout season for the golden boy of English football. This time last year, plenty of people were calling for Foden to be sent out on loan for more first-team action. It turned out Pep Guardiola was right all along.
Runner-up: Riyad Mahrez (Manchester City)
