The 2021/22 LaLiga campaign has ended and we’ve plumped for a 4-2-3-1 formation for our team of the season.

Who made the cut?

GK: Jeremias Ledesma (Cádiz)

Cádiz survived by the skin of their teeth on the last day and a lot of that fact is owed down to the performances of Ledesma. The 29-year-old’s save percentage success rate of 74.8% was only bettered by two other goalkeepers in LaLiga, which is some going when playing for a team down at the bottom.

RB: Pablo Maffeo (Mallorca)

Stuttgart might regret letting the Spaniard move to Mallorca permanently, especially when the fee being touted is just over €2m. Maffeo has been been solid for his loan club this season, landing in the top 10 in the league for tackles and interceptions as well as offering a constant threat going forward.

CB: Jules Koundé (Sevilla)

There are numerous reports linking Koundé with a move away from Sevilla this summer and it’s not hard to see why. The Frenchman has had his own supporters gasping at some of the things he does with the ball at times, and that’s before you even consider his strength at the back.

CB: David Alaba (Real Madrid)

Real pulled off one of the coups of the summer transfer window when they brought the Austrian in on a free transfer from Bayern Munich. The midfielder-turned-left-back has made the centre-back position his own at the Bernabéu.

LB: Marcos Acuña (Sevilla)

The 30-year-old has had a renaissance of sorts late into his career and has found his home in Andalusia. Acuña’s speed and guile on the overlap played a huge part in Julen Lopetegui’s side mustering up a title challenge in the first half of the season.

CM: Dani Parejo (Villarreal)

A LaLiga stalwart that has had one of his best performing seasons in a long time, pulling the strings from deep in Unai Emery’s team. Parejo produced 0.50 goal creating actions per game, the most out of any central midfielder in the league.

CM: Luka Modrić (Real Madrid)

The Croatian appears to be getting better with age defying all logic. Whether outside-of-the-boot assists, scoring worldies from the edge of the box or dropping the shoulder to take three opponents out of the game, Modrić has shown no sign of letting up this season.

RW: Sergio Canales (Real Betis)

Canales was liberated in Manuel Pellegrini’s free-flowing approach to the game, the Spaniard has scored five goals and provided seven assists to his teammates this season coming inside from the right flank.

CAM: Nabil Fekir (Real Betis)

If Canales’ campaign was impressive, then more has to be said about his Betis teammate.

Fekir’s left-foot has become one of the deadliest weapons in Spain, with six goals and eight assists to his name, the Frenchman was the creative hub of a thoroughly impressive and cavalier side.

LW: Vinícius Júnior (Real Madrid)

There are no doubts about it, this was Vinícius’s breakout campaign.

The Brazilian forward has built up a telepathic understanding with Karim Benzema which laid the foundations for Madrid’s title-win. His dribbling technique matched with voracious speed have opposition right-backs up all night, and with 17 goals this season, he more than knows where the back of the net is as well.

What more can be said about this man?

He finished the campaign as the top goalscorer in the league with 27 goals, while also equalling Raúl’s record of 323 for Real Madrid.

The best centre-forward in the world right now.
