Euro 2022 ended at Wembley on Sunday, with England lifting the trophy to cap off a month of thoroughly entertaining football.

Here’s our team of the tournament.

GK: Nicky Evrard 🇧🇪

While it would’ve been easy to select Mary Earps here for some important saves that led  England to glory, Belgium’s Nicky Evrard had far less protection from her backline and truly stood up to the test.

Evrard made the second-highest number of saves (21), but conceded just four times and saved two penalties as Belgium defied the odds and made it to the quarter-final stage in only their second ever major tournament.

The 27-year-old has a pair of extremely safe hands.

Runner-up: Mary Earps (England)

DEF: Lucy Bronze 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Article image:🇪🇺 The OneFootball Euro 2022 Team of the Tournament

The experience of Lucy Bronze was a great asset to England, as the 30-year-old – who is approaching 100 caps for England – marshalled the right hand side of a defence that only conceded two goals in the entire tournament.

A newly completed move to Barcelona proves that Bronze does everything required of a modern wingback, and indeed she completed the 8th highest number of successful crosses in the tournament (8) and the 12th highest number of passes (261).

Running up and down the flank meant Bronze covered 57.8km of distance over the whole tournament, the third-highest figure of any player in Euro 2022.

Runner up: Ève Périsset (France)

DEF: Wendie Renard 🇫🇷

Article image:🇪🇺 The OneFootball Euro 2022 Team of the Tournament

Wendie Renard came into this tournament as one of the most highly-decorated players at club level – with a list of trophies with Lyon and individual honours as long as your arm – and you could tell.

A cool, calm presence in the heart of the well-organised France defence, Renard was pivotal in ensuring that Les Bleues progressed to the semi-final for the first time in their history.

The 6’2″ defender made 27 clearances in only 5 matches played, and was a constant aerial threat from set pieces too.

Runner up: Marina Hegering (Germany)

DEF: Leah Williamson 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Poise, positional awareness, ease on the ball and calm leadership. These are all qualties that describe England captain Leah Williamson, who led her Lionesses to victory without putting a foot wrong.

There’s a reason why England only conceded two goals during the entire tournament, and a large part of that is the skipper’s calm presence, standing in perfect balance with the more physical Millie Bright.

Williamson recovered more balls (56) than any other player during Euro 2022, without making a single tackle. A truly elite defender.

Runner-up: Stefanie van der Gragt (Netherlands)

DEF: Sakina Karchaoui 🇫🇷

This standout left wing-back put in some incredible graft for France, recovering 42 balls (the fourth-highest of the tournament) and making seven tackles and ten clearances along the way.

Her defensive prowess allowed the more attacking players in the side to press forward in Corinne Diacre’s well-organised system.

Runner-up: Felicitas Rauch

MID: Kadidiatou Diani 🇫🇷

If Europe didn’t know who Kadidiatou Diani was before Euro 2022, they did after France’s opening group stage match with Italy.

France were 5-0 up at half-time as this PSG winger terrorised the right-hand flank with her electrifying pace, and sublime skill on the ball as she put cross after cross into the box for her teammates.

After Marie-Antoinette Katoto was ruled out of the tournament through injury, Diani’s excellent wide play was not met with the same ruthless attack inside the area, but she deserves a spot here regardless.

Runner-up: Kosovare Asllani (Sweden)

MID: Lena Oberdorf 🇩🇪

Article image:🇪🇺 The OneFootball Euro 2022 Team of the Tournament

It was a shame that Lena Oberdorf’s Young Player of the Tournament trophy was tinged with tears and the disappointment of losing a major final.

There will undoubtedly be more big occasions for this talented 20-year-old, who had all eyes on her ruthless breaking up of her opponent’s play in the middle of the park.

Runner-up: Aitana Bonmatí (Spain)

MID: Keira Walsh 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Article image:🇪🇺 The OneFootball Euro 2022 Team of the Tournament

Walsh versus Oberdorf was one of the most highly-anticipated clashes of the tournament as two players key to dictating their respective side’s play faced off against each other.

Walsh found a way to shine though, and the midfielder that found a team-mate with the most passes in the entire tournament provided an exquisite ball for Ella Toone’s opener in the final.

She may not be as easily noticed as some of England’s biggest stars, but Walsh plays an unselfish role that is vital to the way that the Lionesses play.

Runner-up: Lina Magull (Germany)

MID: Lauren Hemp 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Article image:🇪🇺 The OneFootball Euro 2022 Team of the Tournament

The PFA Young Player of the year in four of the last five seasons, 21-year-old Lauren Hemp has been one of the biggest stars of the tournament.

Reaching a top speed of 30.7km per hour – the third-highest of the tournament – Hemp registered one goal, one assist, and was a constant attacking threat down England’s left-hand side.

Runner-up: Grace Geyoro (France)

FW: Alexandra Popp 🇩🇪

Her face said it all. Germany striker Alexandra Popp – having missed the last two Euros through injury – pulled out of the final in the warm-up and had to be replaced at the last minute by Lea Schüller and the disappointment was clear for all to see.

Popp was supposed to be going head-to-head with England’s Beth Mead for the Golden Boot award as the strikers began the afternoon on six goals apiece. A defeat for Germany will have made things even worse, but Popp’s deadly record in the matches leading up to the final show what a talented striker she is.

Runner-up: Alessia Russo (England)

FW: Beth Mead 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Six goals and five assists. Beth Mead is at the top of the tree in both categories in this tournament with her all-round contribution to England’s attack.

The 27-year-old is also ranked top in terms of crosses completed, with no less than 15 of her 26 attempts finding an England teammate.

Mead was already well-known as an Arsenal footballer, but her winning performances for England are going to propel her to a whole new level of stardom.

Runner-up: Ellen White (England)
