Chelsea are cruising against AC Milan at Stamford Bridge, looking brilliant and set to win a second preseason game at a canter.
It’s not all sunshine and roses however. There’s some bad news from the second half.
Trevoh Chalobah was harrying an AC Milan play on the touchline and trod on his foot. That in turn led Chalobah to turn his left ankle. The defender looked in quite a lot of pain, and while he was able to limp off without a stretcher, he wasn’t risked any further.
We will hear more from Enzo Maresca after the game, but likely it will be a day or two before the scans are done and we get a solid prognosis on how much time the defender might miss.
Trevoh Chalobah winces in pain as he puts weight on his injured ankle in a preseason friendly against AC Milan.
An injury to Chalobah is bad regardless, but it’s particularly bad in this context. It was announced earlier this week that Levi Colwill had had surgery on his ACL and would miss the whole season. This would mean we’re two centre backs down, with Wesley Fofana’s status still uncertain.
Still, given it was just a rolled ankle we can’t see it being worse than a few weeks at worst.
It’s hard to see Fofana being thrown in for his first start in months in a Premier League game, unless really necessary. Tosin now looks certain to play, and Josh Acheampong has also been bumped up in the pecking order.
It would be a real shame if Chalobah misses significant time – both for him and the team, who want to continue this momentum they’ve been picking up all year and turn it into a strong start to the season.
