An insight into the one central factor holding up Barcelona star Sergi Roberto’s contract renewal with the club has on Monday been provided.

It is of course common knowledge that negotiations to extend midfielder Roberto’s expiring terms in Catalunya’s capital have been underway for several weeks now.

Despite backlash across sections of the Barcelona fanbase, Xavi and his coaching staff have made clear their desire for Roberto to stay put, owing in large part to his influence in the dressing room.

The Blaugrana brass, in turn, are understood to have put a one-year renewal offer on the table.

The 32-year-old’s representatives, however, are eager for Deco and co. to commit to a deal which would potentially extend through 2026.

That’s according to Mundo Deportivo, who point towards as much as being the sole hold-up in an agreement being made official.

‘While the club offers one season, the player’s agent would like to get a longer period, even if it were an optional year depending on the performance of the Barça captain.’

Talks over as much remain ongoing, albeit with it currently unclear just how open Barcelona actually are to such terms.
