As one of the biggest clubs in the world, a plethora of big-name stars have worn the Bayern Munich crest but Javi Martínez has been one of the club’s most underrated signings.

Since moving over from Athletic Bilbao in 2012 for a then-record fee, the Spaniard has developed into an influential player for the Bundesliga giants.

Speaking to Bundesliga.com, former Bayern head coach Jupp Heynckes recalled finalising the deal saying  “Nobody knew who [Martínez] was … Franz Beckenbauer thought he was a type of coffee!”

But after nine seasons, the defensive midfielder has made 266 appearances playing more than 17,000 minutes across all competitions while scoring 14 goals and 11 assists in the process.

Additionally, he was a crucial figure in both treble accomplishments in 2013 and 2020 which play a massive role in the history of the club.

Within the German league itself, he has won 82 per cent of his Bundesliga games which is a record achievement.

In terms of silverware, Martinez has won an average of 2.5 trophies per season and could cap off his final season with the club with his 24th if Bayern win against Borussia Mönchengladbach on Saturday.

It would also mean he would win the Bundesliga title in every season he’s been a Bayern player. A stat which, according to Bundesliga.com, is not even matched by the likes of Thomas Müller, Frank Ribery or David Alaba.

What a way to say goodbye it would be.
