Shrewsbury Town are one club who can relax, and enjoy their final games of the League One season.

Sitting 16th in the current standings, 11 points clear of the relegation zone, and 27 adrift of the play-offs, Steve Cotterill’s side already know they will be playing third-tier football again next season.

As a result, the club are now able to start planning for the summer transfer window, which, as well as potential incomings, will also see a number of players depart the New Meadow.

While some of those may be sold elsewhere, there are others who could simply be allowed to leave the club for nothing when their current deals expire at the end of this season.

So here, we’ve taken a look at the players who, as things stand, will be leaving Shrewsbury for free when their current contracts with the club come to an end in the summer, according to Transfermarkt.

Josh Vela

Having joined Shrewsbury on a two-and-a-half-year deal back in January 2020, Vela is now approaching the end of his current deal, having made 92 appearances for the club to date.

It was reported back in January that Shrewsbury were in talks with the 28-year-old about a new contract, after he admitted he would like to stay at the club, although it remains to be seen if a deal will be agreed.

David Davis

Having previously spent a spell on loan with Shrewsbury in 2011, Davis rejoined the club back in January 2021 following his exit from Birmingham.

Since then, the midfielder has made just over 50 appearances for the club in all competitions, and there will soon be another decision to make on the 31-year-old’s future.

Which club do these 25 players from the 2016/17 Shrewsbury Town squad now play for?

Elliott Bennett

Bennett joined Shrewsbury on a one-year deal last summer following his departure from Championship side Blackburn, and has quickly become a key figure for the Shrews.

Having been named vice captain, the versatile 33-year-old has missed just two league games all season, appearing in a variety of positions, and that, combined with his experience and leadership, mean a new deal for Bennett could be worth pursuing for Shrewsbury.

Aaron Pierre

Having joined Shrewsbury from Northampton back in the summer of 2019, Pierre is now closing in on 100 appearances in all competitions for Salop.

However, he is also in the final few months of the three-year contract he signed when he first arrived at New Meadow, and having often been in and out of the side for the Shrews, that could leave them with an intriguing decision to make here.

Ethan Ebanks-Landell

Another who joined the club in the summer of 2019 who is now reaching the final months of his contract, Ebanks-Landell has made 125 appearances for the club to date.

With the centre back also earning the captain’s armband at Shrewsbury in that time, proving a significant presence on the pitch, the 29-year-old is one the club may well want to keep around for next season and beyond.

Shaun Whalley

A modern day Shrewsbury legend, Whalley has now made over 250 appearances in all competitions during what is now a seven-year spell with the club.

The 34-year-old recently claimed that he still has plenty left to give in the game, and you imagine a number of Shrewsbury fans would be delighted to see them be the ones to benefit from that with a new deal for the midfielder.

Josh Daniels

Having joined Shrewsbury from Glenavon back in the summer of 2020, Daniels is now approaching the final months of his current contract at New Meadow.

The winger has made 48 appearances for the Shrews to date, but even if they do decide to move him on, they may not lose him for free if they do not to, given the club have the option to extend his contract by a further 12 months.

Harry Burgoyne

Despite some opportunities last season, goalkeeper Burgoyne has yet to feature for Shrewsbury in the league this season, with summer signing Marko Marosi establishing himself as the club’s number one.

That is something that could leave the 25-year-old with a somewhat uncertain future, especially considering he is at the stage where he needs to be playing regularly if he is to enjoy a career as a first-choice goalkeeper somewhere.

Cameron Gregory

Despite being handed a call-up to Shrewsbury’s first-team squad as far back as 2017, Gregory has yet to make a first-team appearance for the club.

As a result, the 22-year-old is another goalkeeper whose future at the club could be up for discussion, although with Shrewsbury holding the option to extend his deal by a further 12 months, he is another they could yet look to receive a fee for, should they feel that is the right move for those involved.
