Following Wirtz’s move to Anfield, we’ve ranked the five biggest Bundesliga sales.

The most expensive sales in Bundesliga history

5. Josko Gvardiol – RB Leipzig to Manchester City (£77m)

Manchester City made Josko Gvardiol the second-most expensive defender of all time in 2023. The Croatian centre-back had made a big impression at RB Leipzig, catching the eye of Europe’s top teams.

He was named in the Bundesliga Team of the Season in his final campaign with Leipzig before City spent £77m to land the defender. After winning the Premier League title in his debut season, Gvardiol was named Manchester City Player of the Season in 2024/25.

4. Randal Kolo Muani – Eintracht Frankfurt to Paris Saint-Germain (£77m)

Eintracht Frankfurt have a fine record when it comes to buying and selling forwards for huge profits. Andre Silva, Luka Jovic, Sebastien Haller and Omar Marmoush are among the club’s success stories, but none compare to the sale of Randal Kolo Muani.

The Frenchman was signed from Nantes on a free transfer in 2022 before returning to France in a huge deal just a year later. Kolo Muani scored 23 goals in all competitions to be named Bundesliga Newcomer of the Season before joining PSG.

3. Jude Bellingham – Borussia Dortmund to Real Madrid (£88.5m)

Jude Bellingham snubbed interest from the Premier League to join Real Madrid in 2023.

The deal for the England midfielder was worth an initial £88.5m, potentially rising to £114m with add-ons. Bellingham was an instant success in Spain, helping Real Madrid to a La Liga and Champions League double in his debut season. He scored 23 goals in all competitions and was named La Liga Player of the Season. A firm favourite at the Bernabeu.

2. Ousmane Dembele – Borussia Dortmund to Barcelona (£97m)

Fresh from the world-record £198m sale of Neymar to Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona reinvested their windfall in Ousmane Dembele.

The Frenchman had spent just one impressive season at Borussia Dortmund, where he scored six times and provided 12 assists in 2016/17. Though he won three La Liga titles in Spain, his time at Barcelona was plagued by injuries.

Dembele moved to Paris Saint-Germain in 2023 and has fulfilled his potential in France. The 28-year-old is the Ballon d’Or favourite after scoring 33 goals in the club’s 2024/25 treble success.

1. Florian Wirtz – Bayer Leverkusen to Liverpool (£100m)

Wirtz’s move to Merseyside is a new record sale for the Bundesliga. The 22-year-old has joined Liverpool in a deal that could reach a British transfer record £116m with add-ons.

Liverpool have landed one of Europe’s most coveted talents, with Wirtz inspiring Leverkusen to a first-ever German title in 2023/24. Across the last two seasons, he’s one of just two players to reach 10+ goals and 10+ assists in Europe’s top five leagues in each campaign.
