The transfer fee that Bayern Munich are prepared to pay for Vincent Kompany’s move from Burnley catapults the Belgian into the list of the most expensive coaching transfers of all time. But how does this deal compare to other high-priced coaching changes?

Coach changes are not usually as expensive as player transfers, but in recent years there has been a trend towards higher sums for top coaches.

Vincent Kompany, the former Manchester City captain, is now at the centre of one such high-priced move. According to information from transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Bayern Munich will pay Burnley twelve million euros to sign Kompany as coach. This makes him the fourth most expensive coach in the world.

André Villas-Boas, for whom Chelsea once paid 15 million euros, is in third place.

Graham Potter tops the list with a transfer fee of the equivalent of €25.25 million, which Chelsea paid to Brighton in 2022. This amount puts him slightly ahead of Julian Nagelsmann, who moved from RB Leipzig to Bayern Munich for up to €25 million in 2021.

He is followed by other well-known coaches such as José Mourinho, who went from Inter to Real Madrid for eight million euros, and Ruben Amorim, for whom Sporting Lisbon paid ten million euros to Braga. Brendan Rodgers also appears on the list. Leicester City invested 10.5 million euros to get him from Celtic.

Does Kompany’s profile fit Munich?

The Bayern management, in particular sporting director Max Eberl, has high hopes for Kompany. Although the Belgian does not yet have as much experience as many other coach candidates, his profile could be a good fit for Munich. The former defender stands for attractive possession football and is expected to implement a similar philosophy to his mentor Pep Guardiola at Munich.

After his playing career, which he ended at Manchester City in 2019, Kompany began his coaching career at Anderlecht before moving to Burnley. However, his time in England ended with relegation from the Premier League, having previously achieved promotion. Now Kompany has to show in Munich that he can get more out of a squad with high potential.
