There aren’t many things better in football than seeing a goalkeeper score, is there?

Let’s refresh our memories about five of the best times where the man wearing the gloves stuck one in instead of keeping it out.

Ivan Provedel (Lazio v Atlético de Madrid – September 19, 2023)

We can’t imagine Maurizio Sarri ever thought sending his goalkeeper up in search of a late equaliser in their opening group game in the Champions League was going to be successful.

But Ivan Provedel had other ideas.

Atlético de Madrid had cleared a Lazio corner but the ball landed to the feet of Luis Alberto who bent an inviting cross over to the far post in hope of finding a willing recipient.

In a sea of light blue and red and white shirts it was the one wearing the bright yellow (and gloves) who rose highest to nod the ball past a sprawling Jan Oblak to stun Atleti and send the Stadio Olimpico into hysteria after snatching a point with the last action of the game.

Alisson Becker (Liverpool v West Brom – May 16, 2021)

A last-minute header by a goalkeeper? It has been done before.

Liverpool were stuttering towards a draw against West Brom which would all but rule out their chances of gaining Champions League qualification until Jürgen Klopp’s side were awarded a last-minute corner.

Trent Alexander-Arnold whipped it to the near post and out of nowhere Alisson glanced the ball into the top corner to win the game and get Liverpool’s season back on track.

Jimmy Glass (Carlisle United v Plymouth, May 8, 1999)

One for the kids but stick with us because this one might be the biggest of them all.

Carlisle needed a win on the last day of the 1998/99 season to avoid relegation from the English Football League. The scores were level at 1-1 with seconds to go and up steps Glass as a corner from the hosts lands in the box.

The ball ricocheted around the six-yard box for what seemed like an eternity before it landed at the feet of the man in gloves who showed all the instincts of prime Ronaldo to smash a first-time finish into the bottom corner to save his club.

A pitch invasion followed for a player who only made three appearances for Carlisle as a loan signing but one day there will be a statue built outside Brunton Park.

Peter Schmeichel (Aston Villa v Everton, October 20, 2001)

The big Dane was remembered at Manchester United for his contribution to many league titles but ask Aston Villa supporters what they think of when they remember Schmeichel and they’ll tell you ‘penalty box finisher’.

Well that’s what he was on one occasion at Goodison Park as he became the first goalkeeper to score in the Premier League with a well-executed volley after being left unmarked at the back post.

Asmir Begović (Stoke City v Southampton, November 2 2013)

We’ve been allowed to enjoy glancing headers and real technique amongst this selection so we felt we had to throw a big old whack upfield in there.

Stoke City goalkeeper Begović punted it into the air but sadly for the hapless Artur Boruc the wind had a mind of it’s own in the Potteries that day and carried it all the way over his head and into the back of the net.

At 13 seconds, it was also in the top 10 quickest goals in Premier League history until 2018.
