Ahead of Manchester City’s 2-nil win over Leicester City at the beginning of April at the Etihad Stadium, Manchester City fans held a peaceful protest. The protest first took place outside the Etihad. That was followed by a large section of City fans who remained in the concourse until the 9th minute of the match.
The protests were in response to season ticket, ticket pricing and other issues with Manchester City’s ticketing system. Now Manchester City have responded to the concerns of City fans. The prices of game-by-game tickets have dropped for Premier League games for next season. It is a win for City fans and the supporter groups that led the drive for change.
Manchester City have released a statement on the ticket prices for Premier League fixtures for next season. A summary of Manchester City’s pricing changes can be found on City’s official website. Simon Bajkowski of Manchester Evening News put out the below tweet that briefly summarises the price changes.
Today’s news is a win for Manchester City fans and the supporter groups that led the drive for change in terms of ticketing prices at City. City Matters, WeAre1894, MCFC Foodbank and Trade Union Blues have long fought the fight for City fans. Manchester City fans have supported their cause, and today, the news they have fought for has arrived. That is great news as watching City shouldn’t be taken away from local fans. They should be able to easily afford to watch their team play. Today’s news gives hope that English football isn’t being taken away from the fans. The hope is that today’s news can cause a ripple effect across English football.
But from another point of view, it shows that the Manchester City hierarchy isn’t losing touch with their fans. Throughout the ticket price hikes and the season ticket situation it did seem that City were losing touch with their local fans. That cannot afford to happen. Local fans are the lifeblood of Manchester City, and their concerns must be listened to. Today’s news shows that they have been listened to and acted upon. Going forward, the City hierarchy must learn the lessons from what has unfolded. That way the entire club can move forward united between the club and the fans.
There are still issues in regards to season tickets and the criteria that surrounds them at Manchester City that must be resolved. But today’s news is a massive step in the right direction. That is something to take from the situation that came to a head this season but has festered for several years now.
