Luka Modric’s Croatia will lock horns with Argentina today, as both sides will fight it out to determine the first World Cup finalist.

Croatia’s exploits in the major tournaments are well known and what is much more well known is their habit of winning in extra time and on penalties. That is how they went past Japan and Brazil, beating both sides on penalties.

Having said, it is a Modric record that will definitely make Argentina wary of the Real Madrid man. The first penalty shootout took place in 1982 during the Spain edition of the World Cup and since then, 33 more penalty shootouts have taken place. Out of a total 34 games, 276 players have taken 312 penalties (212 converted, 69 saves, 16 deflected, 8 on the post and 7 on the crossbar).

But Modric is the player with the highest conversion rate, as he has put away all three of the penalties that he has taken in World Cup penalty shootouts. His victims have been Denmark, Russia and Brazil. Roberto Baggio took three penalties, but he converted only two, with one being the rather infamous miss.
