What awaits the Red Bulls in Brazil?
The second stop of the tour is in Atibaia. With a population of around 150,000, the city is where Red Bull Bragantino train, one of the most exciting clubs in South America.
Here are five interesting facts about the club.
Red Bull Bragantino, a club founded in 1928, have been known by their current name since 2020. They returned to the top flight of Brazilian football (Série A) in 2019 after a 21-year absence and have remained there ever since. The club's honours include coming second in Série A in 1991 and winning the prestigious Campeonato Paulista, the top-flight professional state football league in the Brazilian state of São Paulo, in 1990.
Bragantino are enjoying a strong season so far, occupying fourth place in Série A after nine games. A five-game winning streak has seen them cement their place in the top six. They also beat our upcoming opponents Santos 2-1.
Last season was a tense one for the Red Bull Bragantino fans. They only avoided relegation on the 38th and final matchday, defeating Criciúma 5-1. They avoided defeat in six of their last seven games to beat the drop.
“The club embraces a philosophy of very dominant and aggressive football - we want to bring a high level of intensity onto the pitch and excite our fans with fast-paced attacking play,” emphasised Fernando Seabra as he began his role as head coach. In October 2024, the 47-year-old Brazilian took over as coach and, as mentioned, led Bragantino to safety thanks to a strong finish to the season.
Eduardo Sasha scored a number of important goals on their way to survival, netting 15 times in total last season. The striker is on three goals this term, while his strike partner Isidro Pitta is their top goalscorer with five goals. Goalkeeper Cleiton is also the side's captain.
With an average age of 25.2 years, Red Bull Bragantino have the youngest squad of all 20 top-flight sides. Several regulars in their team are extremely young, such as Vinicinho (21, 4 goals, 2 assists) and Jhon Jhon (22, 4 goals, 5 assists). “This is part of our philosophy. We want to give talented players the opportunity to develop at the highest level," said coach Seabra.
The Cícero de Souza Marques Stadium, with a capacity of 12,000, has been Bragantino's temporary home since the start of May. A new stadium is being built on the site of their old ground, Estadio Nami Abi Chedid in Bragança Paulista. Like our home, the new stadium will be named the 'Red Bull Arena' and should be completed in the next three to four years.
One highlight of a visit to watch Red Bull Bragantino is the sausage sandwich available at the ground. The city of Bragança Paulista is known for its traditional sausages.
