Sam Johnstone has continued to excel in-between the sticks in the Championship for West Brom and his showings haven’t gone unnoticed, with a number of top flight teams now showing interest in his services.

Having broken onto the international stage with England, he is now seen as one of the best goalkeepers in the country – and it’s no wonder he is therefore drawing admiring glances from elsewhere in the football pyramid.

If the Baggies are also unable to gain promotion this campaign, it would further prompt a potential move away, as there is the chance to play regular top flight football on offer from several different sides.

So, what’s the latest on the situation, who is interested and will a move happen?

Quiz: 30 questions about West Brom’s best strikers from the last 5 years – Can you score 30/30?

After a lot of prior interest from the likes of Tottenham and West Ham, as reported by The Sun, the latest side is Newcastle. With a wealth of money now at their disposal, they will be hoping to lure him away from the Hawthorns and to St James’ Park as reported by Calciomercato.

It therefore seems as though we could be geared for a long transfer battle over the winter window and into the summer if a deal cannot be reached in the turn of the year.

The Baggies will not want to lose such an important player and especially when it is right in the middle of a potentially important promotion campaign. The issue though lies in his current contract situation. Birmingham Live is reporting that he will not pen a new agreement with West Brom and that means he will see out the remainder of his deal.

The bad news for fans of the club is that current contract is set to run out at the end of the current season. It means that if the club don’t cash in on him in the winter transfer window, they could lose one of their most valuable players for nothing.

It leaves them with a dilemma – with more and more clubs entering the race for Johnstone, how many of them would be willing to part ways with some cash to ensure they secure his signature before anyone else? Would West Brom be willing to lose him mid-season if it meant getting a fee rather than letting him help them in their promotion battle before letting him depart for nothing?

There are more and more top flight teams considering bids and the Baggies therefore have a decision to make on whether to flog him now or wait. One thing is for certain though – Valerien Ismael will certainly face a struggle in keeping him at the Hawthorns, whether it is now or in the summer.
