Life after Cristiano Ronaldo and Zinedine Zidane started well at the Bernabéu but things have quickly turned sour, with Madrid losing four of their last five games and scoring just once.

This week they take on Viktoria Plžen in the Champions League before a monster LaLiga clash with Barcelona at the weekend.

However, the board are already looking further ahead into the future and José Mourinho – who was in charge at Real Madrid from 2010-2013 – is being linked with a return to the Spanish capital.

The Manchester United boss distanced himself from reports on Monday but El Pais now claim contact has already been made.

According to the Spanish daily, Real Madrid director general José Ángel Sánchez has already held talks with Mourinho.

Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez is said to view Mourinho as the ‘authoritatian’ who can provide ‘shock therapy’ to a drifting squad.

Nonetheless, he remains Manchester United manager for the time being and the Red Devils have indicated they will stand behind the Portuguese.

Mourinho has a contract at Old Trafford until 2020. The report goes on to say Mourinho is waiting to be sacked, with Manchester United currently 10th in the Premier League nine games into the season.
