Inter Milan were once again very active in the transfer market in the lead up to this season, and it’s resulted in Antonio Conte having a very big squad as he chases the Serie A title.

Despite that, there are a few key regulars that the Italian coach always calls upon. For example, Samir Handanovic, Stefan de Vrij and Romelu Lukaku will always be in the XI when the big games come around.

Another name on that list is Nicolo Barella, who hasn’t missed a game in this campaign. The form he has shown under Conte has resulted in the dynamic midfielder having a similar importance for the national team as well.

Having starred as the Azzurri sealed qualification, Barella will already have one eye on the upcoming major tournament that looms large. The latest Euro 2020 odds from Betfair have Roberto Mancini’s men at 11/1 to lift the trophy, and Barella will be pivotal to their chances.

However, the former Cagliari man will concentrate on that when the time is right. For now, it’s all about Inter. With Juventus looking truly vulnerable for the first time in a long while, there is a Scudetto up for grabs and Conte’s men are more than capable.

They have the firepower, they have the depth, but it won’t be easy as up to half a dozen sides may feel they can push for the title as well.

So, if Inter are to win their first top-flight crown since that memorable treble year in 2010, they will need all their influential figures to step up. Even at 23, Barella falls into that category, and playing at such a high level, under huge scrutiny and pressure, could help take his game up another notch. That is perhaps the most exciting thing about Barella – he’s still young.

Given his willingness to take responsibility, and the way he relishes the physical aspect of the game, you can forget he isn’t a seasoned professional. So, the potential to grow and improve is there.

Playing with the likes of Arturo Vidal, who signed earlier this year, is only going to help on that front too. Whilst the Chile legend can be reckless at times, his all-action displays are something that Barella must look to emulate and working with him on a day-to-day basis could be invaluable.

So, the challenge for the energetic midfielder is to make this season a special one for club and country, and Barella should be excited by the position he finds himself in. He is a regular for an Inter side that have the ability to make history for their fans and an Italian national team that are rejuvenated under Mancini.

Ultimately, there’s a lot of football still to be played but 2021 could be a year to remember when the prizes are dished out. Inter and Italian success is certainly possible, and the talented Barella will be crucial to both as they chase glory.
