The October international break is over, and many nations have now booked their tickets to next summer’s European Championship.

Based on what we’ve seen in qualifying so far, which team will be most likely to lift the trophy at Euro 2024?

The way Portugal have bounced back from World Cup embarrassment at the hands of Morocco to qualifying titans has been exemplary.

Under Roberto Martínez’s tutelage, the Seleçao look like a completely different side and have so far won all eight of their Group J games, scoring a remarkable 32 goals.

That tally is almost double the next best side in Euro 2024 qualification and if all the key men stay fit – Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes, Gonçalo Ramos – then Portugal will be a force to be reckoned with in Germany next summer.

I really think 2024 is the year England end their 58-year wait for an international trophy.

Gareth Southgate’s side have come close now in recent tournaments but it feels they are not far off with the likes of Harry Kane, Kieran Trippier, John Stones well into their peak. The team is well balanced with creativity everywhere, the all-round engine of Declan Rice, threat on the wings in Marcus Rashford and Bukayo Saka and then there’s the new Galáctico in no.10.

Any team that has a talent of Jude Bellingham has a chance of winning any tournament.

If anyone is going to win the European Championships, they will almost certainly have to beat France, which will prove no easy task.

Their loss in the World Cup final last December marked the end of an era with the retirements of Karim Benzema, Hugo Lloris and Raphaël Varane, but there has been no slowdown whatsoever from the now-Kylian Mbappé captained side, with a flawless qualification campaign to date.

A stacked squad featuring young talents such as William Saliba and Eduardo Camavinga, as well as old heads in Antoine Griezmann and Oliver Giroud, should fancy their chances at winning a first EUROs since the 2000 dream team.

After what he achieved at Bayern Munich, I found it really surprising that Hansi Flick couldn’t get a tune out of Germany during his time in charge of Die Mannschaft.

And now the DFB have hired arguably the best coach in international football in Julian Nagelsmann, who will have a point to prove after the abrupt way his Bayern tenure ended.

Germany will be hosts next summer but at the moment, there doesn’t seem to be a huge amount of expectation on them to deliver the goods. That could suit them nicely, and Nagelsmann has a quality pool of players to work with who will give anyone at the tournament a run for their money.
