The Great Debate: Who has been the signing of the season in Europe?

We’ve reached that point in the season where league tables are taking shape across Europe, and title challengers are beginning to emerge.

It’s time to reflect on the summer transfer window, and which European club looks to have made the signing of the season based on the evidence we’ve seen so far.

I have been so impressed by Jérémy Doku since his move to Manchester City. New signings tend to take a little while (sometimes a whole season or more) to get used to playing under Pep Guardiola, but Doku has taken the Premier League by storm with some dazzling displays and nine goal involvements in 13 appearances for the treble winners.

At €60m he wasn’t cheap, but he’s only 21 and City look to have invested wisely in bags of potential.

From one Belgian forward joining the Premier League to another leaving it on yet another loan deal (this time to Roma): Romelu Lukaku.

The national team’s record scorer’s reputation has taken a battering in recent years to a point of seemingly no return but he has been revitalised in the Eternal City and working under his old boss José Mourinho.

There have been nine goals in 11 starts, including three in three Europa League games. Could the 30-year-old’s redemption arc see him bring Roma one step better than last year’s final heartache?

€50m may seem like a lot of money for a player that, before this season, had played under 40 games of top division football.

But that’s looking like more of a steal every single day for Tottenham.

Micky van de Ven has been an utter sensation for Spurs so far this term, with his pace at centre-back allowing Ange Postecoglou’s side to maintain their incredibly high defensive line.

Simply put – without Van de Ven Tottenham wouldn’t be where they are in the Premier League.

I know it’s an obvious one but it’s hard to look past Harry Kane, isn’t it?

The price was steep (could end up costing £100m) but it’s a case of so far, so good for the England captain in Germany, hitting 17 goals in 14 games in all competitions, including three hat-tricks.

If it carries on this form, the 30-year-old is surely going to be lifting the first trophy of his career by the end of this season.

It’s a celebration we’ve seen week in and week out, as Jude Bellingham has grabbed all the headlines since the end of the summer transfer window.

Jumping from Borussia Dortmund to the pressure of playing for Real Madrid would be a feat for anyone, but he has made it look like a walk in the park at 20-years-old. The Cristiano Ronaldo-like numbers speak for themselves.

Bellingham has a staggering 13 goals and three assists in his first 14 games across all competitions, including a brace to win El Clásico. In comparison, he only scored 24 goals for BVB in 132 matches.

He appears well beyond his years in terms of skill and flair, yet the England international also exudes heightened leadership, confidence and composure at such a young age. So much so that it’s even stunned his senior team-mates.

The problem with this summer signing, though, is his sparkle has forced Madrid’s other shiny attacking talents to diminish. So the question is, can Bellingham actually maintain his incredible form and continue bailing Madrid out all season?
