With the title now out of reach we’ve seen an increasingly tetchy Pep Guardiola over the past few weeks.
The Manchester City coach has never been a good loser but with Liverpool racing to the Premier League trophy, it’s become clear that the Catalan coach’s time at the Etihad is nearing its end.
But where will the follically challenged tactician go next? Our writers have had their say.
Pep’s got ‘summer move to Qatar’ written all over him if you ask me. His sarcasm has gone into overdrive this term and despite reports that he wants to see out his contract, I reckon an embarrassing Champions League exit to Real Madrid will be enough to see the Catalan depart forthwith.
Next stop: €20m a year in the Middle East ahead of the 2022 World Cup.
He will still be at Manchester City next season, no doubt about that. His contract doesn’t run out until the summer of 2021 and he’s repeatedly insisted he will see it out.
After that, I see him heading to Juventus. He had a spell in Italy as a player with Brescia and Roma and I reckon he definitely fancies heading back there as a manager.
Juve publicly fluttered their eyelashes in his direction last summer and him taking over from Maurizio Sarri at the end of next season would be a natural progression.
On holiday. Doing four years at Barcelona drained Guardiola and he needed a year off before he went to Bayern Munich, where he did a three-year stint.
From there he was ready to jump into his work at Manchester City but Guardiola is starting to look exasperated there too.
He’ll do one more year, to fulfil his contract, and then take a break after eight back-to-back seasons.
I would be very surprised to see Pep not get himself back up for the challenge of overcoming Liverpool again next season, but after that he has PSG written all over him.
Their overall aim is to bring home a European Cup, and Guardiola measures himself against the bar of winning that trophy.
A team that craves the Champions League with unlimited funds seems like the perfect place for a manager who craves the Champions League and has experience working with……. unlimited funds.
I’ll have to jump on the Juventus bandwagon with Dan here.
Pep seems to be on a mission to take the biggest and best team in each land and prove to himself he can make the best, better.
