We’ve opened up Pandora’s box with this week’s Great Debate.
So, what is the best jersey of all time and why?
It has to be the iconic Trikot jersey worn by West Germany at the 1990 World Cup.
A design masterpiece by adidas which has still never been bettered.
Sampdoria get my vote and I didn’t have to think about it.
The blue base colour is complemented beautifully by the white, red and black stripes and they’ve kept the winning formula.
Why fix something that ain’t broke? Classic, simple yet brilliant.
Few football shirts are iconic as those worn by the Netherlands.
The shirt worn at the 1974 World Cup tops the lot with its brilliant shade of orange and enormous big lion emblem.
Especially as Johan Cruyff’s adidas-made shirt was adorned by just two stripes, so as to avoid conflict with Puma, who he had a sponsorship deal with.
Truly unique.
Ferrari. Prada. Bulgari. Fendi. Italians know a thing or two about iconic brands and timeless style.
They outdid themselves in the 90s though, with a whole host of brilliant football kits.
Serie A was the best league in the world at the time, and although they didn’t actually win much, Fiorentina regularly took top spot when it came to amazing jerseys.
This 1998/99 vintage, with the Nintendo logo, made by Fila, is easily the best.
It may not necessarily be a fan favourite, infact the World Cup 1990 kit is probably wider known, but its certainly the best and most memorable for me.
The first World Cup I remember watching was back in 1998 and as Michael Owen took apart the Argentinian defence and ran off to celebrate, the image of that glorious Umbro Kit is stuck in my mind.
Its a fairly simple jersey – a smart collar, the Three Lions proudly front and centre and when your idols are wearing it with pride in the biggest tournament in the world, you cant help but love it.
