Kylian Mbappé took our breath away as he netted his hat-trick at Camp Nou on Tuesday.
But he also got us wondering, what is the best ever Champions League hat-trick?
Hat-trick? I’ll go one better. Robert Lewandowski’s four-goal haul against Real Madrid in 2013 was one of the greatest performances in Champions League history.
Madrid were big favourites when they arrived in Dortmund but Lewandowski had other ideas, cleverly steering a cross home, smartly turning and poking a weak Marco Reus effort in, pulling off an outrageous turn before finding the top corner and, finally, smashing a penalty in.
Four superb goals in one of the competition’s all-time great semi-final matches.
Manchester City haven’t had much to shout about in the Champions League but Sergio Agüero’s hat-trick against Pep Guardiola’s Bayern Munich in 2014 was pretty special.
City were 2-1 down and heading out of the competition at the group stage when Agüero popped up with two goals in the last five minutes to complete his hatty and keep his side’s hopes alive.
Maybe not the best ever, but I enjoyed it.
This Thierry Henry hat-trick against Roma will always live long in the memory.
Having gone down to an early Antonio Cassano goal, the Frenchman said – enough of that – I’ll sort this out.
One trademark finish, one clinical left footed strike and another perfect free-kick. He could do it all.
Despite the fact Cristiano Ronaldo is Mr. Champions League and has many hat tricks to his name in the competition, the original Ronaldo, R9, has the most legendary one.
In the 2003 quarter finals, Real were beaten 4-3 at Old Trafford but thanks to Ronaldo’s efforts, it meant they progressed to the semi finals on aggregate.
His mix of outstanding finishing, raw pace and power, and a touch of Brazilian flair was so brilliant that he even earned a standing ovation from the home crowd.
20 October 2010. Inter have just annihilated Tottenham Hotspur during the first-half of their group stage meeting leading 4-0 at half-time.
Step forward Gareth Bale who made it a personal mission to get his side back into the game, and by doing so began the dismantling of Maicon’s career.
The Welshman scored three belters and the player who went on to win four Champions Leagues was born.
I find it almost impossible to look past Wayne Rooney here.
At the age of just 18 and with massive expectations already on his shoulder, he was thrown in for a Manchester United debut in Europe against Fenerbahçe.
And nonchalantly smashed in three glorious goals, all from outside the area, to prove that he was the real deal.
