Phil Foden looks set to miss crucial Premier League and Champions League clashes, as the Manchester City forward continues to recover from surgery.

The 22 year-old underwent surgery for appendicitis last weekend, withdrawing from Gareth Southgate’s England squad for a European Championship qualifier against Ukraine at Wembley Stadium.

Manchester City confirmed that the forward would miss Saturday’s Premier League clash against Liverpool, with the Blues having the opportunity to move within five points of league leaders Arsenal with a victory.

Pep Guardiola could also be without striker Erling Haaland for this weekend’s crunch fixture after the Norwegian withdrew from international duty due to a groin injury.

The City manager confirmed that Haaland would be assessed ahead of Saturday afternoon but also revealed that Foden faces potentially three weeks on the sidelines, possibly ruling him out of five matches.

City face Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals in April as well as having crucial matches in the Premier League and FA Cup, with the Blues bidding to win three trophies this season.

When asked about Foden’s recovery on Friday, ahead of the Liverpool match, Guardiola said: “The doctors tell me 2-3 weeks I think, we will see how he develops.”

Should Foden return after two weeks, then he would miss the following three matches:

01/04/2023 – Liverpool (H), Premier League

08/04/2023 – Southampton (A), Premier League

11/04/2023 – Bayern Munich (H), Champions League (Quarter-Final First-Leg)

Should Foden return after three weeks, then he would miss the following five matches and be set for a return against Sheffield United in the Emirates FA Cup semi-finals:

01/04/2023 – Liverpool (H), Premier League

08/04/2023 – Southampton (A), Premier League

11/04/2023 – Bayern Munich (H), Champions League (Quarter-Final First-Leg)

15/04/2023 – Leicester City (H), Premier League

19/04/2023 – Bayern Munich (A), Champions League (Quarter-Final Second-Leg)
