The five highest spending clubs of the summer transfer window so far

Article image:The five highest spending clubs of the summer transfer window so far

There’s a sense from some that football’s transfer market might be levelling out after some stratospheric sums in recent windows, but there’s still been a truck-load of cash spent this summer.

We’ve looked at the five European clubs to have spent the most money in the 2024 summer transfer window to date.

5. Chelsea – £109.5m

It’s perhaps no surprise to see the big-spending Blues here.

Chelsea have obliterated spending records in recent windows as Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital have invested more than £1.2bn on new signings in just over two years.

It’s not quite been the £434.5m of last summer – the most spent by any club during a transfer window in Premier League history – and it’s less than the West Londoners spent on Moises Caicedo alone 12 months ago, but it’s still enough to earn them a place on this list.

Eight new arrivals have been welcomed in at Stamford Bridge, to add to an already bloated squad. The task for Enzo Maresca will be assembling the imports into some sort of order, after consecutive campaigns of inconsistency.

We’ve not even included the signing of Estevao Willian on this list, who will link up with Chelsea next summer for a fee in the region of £51m.

4. Lyon – £114m

Lyon are a surprise name in the top five as the French side invest in a bid to return to former glories.

The majority of their £114m investment has headed to Premier League clubs, with five signings from English sides including a £44m double deal for Nottingham Forest duo Orel Mangala and Moussa Niakhate.

Lyon have also signed Georgian Euro 2024 star Georges Mikautadze, who finished as the joint-leading scorer at this summer’s tournament.

3. West Ham – £117.5m

West Ham have backed new manager Julen Lopetegui to the tune of £117.5m this summer, with an ensemble of exciting additions arriving at the London Stadium.

German forward Niclas Fullkrug will lead the line for the Irons after arriving from Borussia Dortmund, while Crysencio Summerville has signed from Leeds as the reigning Championship Player of the Season.

The most expensive import has been Max Kilman. West Ham spent £40m to sign the former Wolves captain, as Lopetegui sought a reunion with the defender.

2. Bayern Munich – £121m

Bayern Munich’s response to a first trophyless season in over a decade has been a splurge in the transfer market.

The German giants have splashed around £121m on Crystal Palace winger Michael Olise, Fulham enforcer Joao Palhinha and Stuttgart centre-back Hiroki Ito. More arrivals are expected amid interest in Jonathan Tah and Desire Doue, once the expected sales of Noussair Mazraoui and Matthijs de Ligt are completed.

1. Aston Villa – £150m

Aston Villa are the biggest spenders of the summer so far with around £150m invested in new additions.

Unai Emery’s side will compete in the Champions League in 2024-25 and have bolstered their squad with eight first-team arrivals, including the £50m capture of Amadou Onana from Everton.

Much of Villa’s transfer business has been offset by the departures of Douglas Luiz (Juventus) and Moussa Diaby (Al-Ittihad) for around £93m combined.
