Let’s look at Pompey’s most famous fans – and no, we are not counting John ‘Portsmouth Football Club’ Westwood in this, despite his gained notoriety over the years for his actions and appearance!

Ian Darke

Born and bred in Portsmouth, Darke is a well-renowned football commentator who has worked for some of the world’s biggest companies.

Darke was one of the main commentators along with Martin Tyler for the newly-formed Premier League in 1992 after covering a multitude of sports on BBC Radio prior to that, and also was the lead Boxing commentator for Sky in the 90’s.

Since 2010, Darke has worked for ESPN in the United States as their lead broadcaster whilst also commentating Premier League matches for BT Sport in the UK – all the while he is still a devoted Pompey fan and is a regular commenter of their action on social media.

Will Ferrell

A surprise guest at the start of the 2019-20 season to Fratton Park was none-other than movie megastar Ferrell.

Ferrell was in attendance to watch the club’s League One clash with Tranmere Rovers due to his friendship with Portsmouth owner Michael Eisner, who invited the Elf and Anchorman actor to the south coast to take in a match – in-fact months prior, Eisnar’s son Breck took a picture with Ferrell whilst watching the club’s game with Accrington Stanley from across the Atlantic Ocean.

It’s unclear as to whether or not Ferrell follows Pompey’s from afar, but they can certainly claim him as a celebrity fan.

Anya Shrubsole

Portsmouth probably don’t have many MBE’s (Order of the British Empire) to support them, but they at least have one in the form of Shrubsole.

Shrubsole was an England international cricketer from 2008 until last year when she retired from the sport, and for being a part of the 2017 World Cup-winning side she was awarded an MBE in the 2018 New Year’s Honours list.

Despite being born in Bath, Shrubsole is a Portsmouth fan and proudly professes it in her Twitter bio, and now that she is retired from the sport she may be able to get to a few more matches now she has free time.
