Manchester City take on Crystal Palace tomorrow at Wembley in this season’s FA Cup final. Despite a packed football calendar that has taken over in modern football, the FA Cup remains a special competition. Pep Guardiola has pointed this out ahead of tomorrow’s match. You can also tell by the way several of Manchester City’s players have spoken about the upcoming FA Cup final against Crystal Palace that they are determined to bring the FA Cup back to Manchester.
Manchester City will be lining up in their third consecutive FA Cup final this weekend. They beat Manchester United 2-1 in the 22/23 FA Cup final. Manchester City lost to their arch-rival in last season’s final. This time, they take on a hungry Crystal Palace outfit at Wembley. Oliver Glasner’s side will be determined to get at Manchester City at Wembley. It sets the scene for what could be an enthralling match this weekend.
Speaking ahead of Saturday’s match, Pep Guardiola has said what a privilege it is for his team to be playing in the FA Cup final. In an interview with the English FA’s official website, he said: “I say it every time we are in this position, but I will say it again: it is such a privilege to be able to play in this incredible stadium and have a chance to win this beautiful trophy.”
“This is our third year in a row in the FA Cup Final, which is something we are very, very proud of. In the FA Cup, you play all the top teams from the Premier League and the Championship and always there are times when it is difficult.”
“To have made three Finals in a row shows how consistent we have been. It says everything about this generation of players and the club itself.”
In an interview with the English FA’s official website, Josko Gvardiol has spoken of his desire to go one better than last season. He explained: “It’s a privilege to compete in this competition and to have the opportunity to lift this trophy at Wembley is very motivating. We know we didn’t perform to the level that was required in the Final last season. We want to make up for it this season, and we’ve worked so hard in the competition this year to give us an opportunity to do so, knowing we are facing another great team in Crystal Palace.”
Mateo Kovacic has echoed the sentiments of his Croatian international teammate. In an interview with mancity.com, he said: “The FA Cup is the oldest cup and it’s special. It’s knock-out games and if you have a bad day, you’re out. We’ve had a good run this season and I can’t wait for the Final. It will be amazing on the day – the weather will be good, and all the family will come too. We always expect the season to be better, but I think many teams are having good seasons and won’t end up with a trophy. In the end, we are in a Final which is never easy, and we are still in the top four which is also not easy.”
Based on the comments from Pep Guardiola, Mateo Kovacic, and Josko Gvardiol, Manchester City are ready for the FA Cup final. Saturday’s match is a special occasion, and it is a marquee fixture on the football calendar. Pep Guardiola’s side must be up for the occasion as they will face a quality Crystal Palace side at Wembley. Based on the comments from Pep Guardiola, Josko Gvardiol and Mateo Kovacic, they will be.
Making three FA Cup finals in a row is no easy achievement. It speaks to the consistency and drive of Pep Guardiola’s squad. Although it must be said that this season, Manchester City haven’t lived up to those lofty standards. But in the FA Cup they have. Now they have one more game to win to claim silverware out of this season. Pep Guardiola’s side must play the game and not the occasion at Wembley. It did feel like they played the occasion for the majority of last season’s FA Cup final defeat to Manchester United. That cannot happen again tomorrow.
Pep Guardiola and his team know how special the FA Cup final is. The hope is that they produce a performance to match the occasion and their words ahead of the game at Wembley. If they do they may well being another piece of silverware back to Manchester.
