Southampton started in a 4-4-2 formation with a front two of Armando Broja and Nathan Redmond.

Leeds United started in a 3-3-3-1 formation with Rodrigo leading the attack.

Leeds United used up all their substitutions in the second half in search of an equaliser.

Southampton attempted 17 shots on goal with four of these shots on target. They had a better xG than Leeds who failed to even get a shot on target. Southampton were also better than their opponents defensively, as they had a higher success rate in the different duels they attempted.

Armando Broja had the highest xG of any player on the pitch and also attempted the most number of shots. Mohamed Elyounoussi attempted the most number of dribbles for Southampton and also won four aerial duels.

Southampton managed to keep four of their 17 attempts on target. Most of the efforts that they attempted from outside the penalty area were off target.

Leeds United attempted only three shots on goal and failed to keep any of their efforts on target, which is why they had a very low xG.

Armando Broja attempted five shots on goal with two of these attempts on target. As seen in the xG timeline, Southampton had a higher xG than Leeds United throughout the game.

Nathan Redmond and Mohamed Salisu attempted the most number of passes for Southampton. Redmond also received most passes from his teammates.

Ilian Meslier gave away the ball for Leeds as he attempted 31 passes which were not completed. Leeds did manage to keep more possession than Southampton but failed to create any significant chances.

Southampton completed more passes in the central part of the field and made most of their attacks from the left flank. They attempted four smart passes throughout the game and three of those four were on the left flank. Nathan Redmond attempted the most number of crosses for the Saints. Leeds kept most of the ball in their own half and failed to move the ball into the final third. The Leeds defenders attempted more high passes and tried to play more passes from their own half.

Southampton were most threatening from the right flank. Redmond had the highest xT and created the most number of chances for the Saints.

Nathan Redmond was the most dangerous player on the pitch as he had an overall high xT with the passes as well as the dribbles he attempted.

Leeds were able to create some chances from the right side of the pitch but failed to make the right move when they were in such positions. Llorente had the highest xT from the long balls that he played into the final third.

Most of the Leeds players had a high xT from the passes they attempted but failed to capitalise on the chances they created. Jack Harrison had an overall high expected threat with the passes and dribbles he attempted.

Southampton won most of the duels they attempted in the opposition half and won the ball higher up the pitch.

Southampton attempted 16 aerial duels in the final third and won 10 of those 16 attempts.

The Southampton defenders only lost one of the 15 loose ball duels that they attempted.

Leeds United won 55% of the defensive duels they attempted.

Liam Cooper won the most number of aerial duels for Leeds. He attempted 10 aerial duels and won six.

Leeds United usually play a high pressing game and win most of the 50-50 challenges they attempt. Jamie Shackleton won four of the six loose ball duels he attempted.

The win takes Southampton to seven points and 15th place, a point and two league positions better off than Leeds. Leeds on the other hand have moved down to 17th and only have one win from their eight games now.
