Sheffield United hosted Stoke City at Bramall Lane for Matchday 12 of the 2021-22 EFL Championship season. The Blades were able to register a 2-1 victory over the Potters with late goals from Mousset and McGoldrick after Jacob Brown gave Stoke City the lead. The victory saw the home side move up to 13th with 15 points from 12 games after a shaky start to the season. The visitors, Stoke City, are currently in fifth in the standings with 21 points from their 12 games.

Subs: Lys Mousset, David McGoldrick and Conor Hourihane The average positions of the Sheff Utd players show that they had a lot of possession in the match and were pressing from upfront whenever out of possession. Most players had their average positions in the opposition half. Most of their players’ average positions were inside their own half or around the halfway line. The Blades had a great game in which they took a total of 16 shots on goal, hitting the target four times and scoring two goals. They had 52% possession in the match and created an xG of 2.18 over the 90 minutes. On the other hand, Stoke City took 11 shots in the game and hit the target five times. They scored once and had an xG of 1.59 in the game.

Ben Wilmot had the highest individual xG of 0.64 in the match while Lys Mousset had the highest xG for Sheffield United with 0.48. Enda Stevens made 16 passes into the final third for Sheff Utd, while Nick Powell made 12 for Stoke City. The shot map for The Blades shows the 16 shots they took in the game, hitting the target twice ad scoring twice as well. They only took three or four shots from outside the box, as the rest were taken from inside the box. The two goals were also scored from close range.

The shot map for the visitors shows that they took nearly half of their shots from outside the box and the remaining half from inside. They scored their goal with a shot from the edge of the box right in front of the goal.

The xT creation timeline of the match shows that there were not many opportunities created in the beginning of the match, but the chances started to come up towards the end of the first half. The second half was also full of threat creation and goal-scoring opportunities. Sheffield United also saw a huge increase in their xG in the second half. The pass matrix for the home team shows that they were able to accumulate a lot of passes in the match. Enda Stevens attempted and received the most passes for The Blades with 77 and 57 passes respectively. Stoke City’s pass matrix shows that they had a large number of passes in the match as well to show for their possession. Ben Wilmot attempted and received the most passes for The Potters with 63 and 47 passes respectively. The passing zones for the home team show that they had a huge concentration of completed passes all over the midfield and defence, and especially on the left side of the attacking third. Morgan Gibbs-White put in nine passes into the opposition box, while Ben Osborn put in eight passes and an additional five crosses into the box for the Blades. The passing zones of Stoke City show that they completed most of their passes on the two sides of their midfield and also in the central defensive area. Tommy Smith put in five crosses and five passes into the box for the Potters. The xT creation zones of Sheff Utd show that they created a lot of threats and opportunities in and around the opposition box. Enda Stevens had the highest xT creation from passing for The Blades. Other than Enda Stevens, Oliver Norwood and John Fleck also had decent xT generation from their passing. Jadon Bogle had the highest xT creation from dribbling, followed by  John Fleck and Lys Mousset. The xT creation zones of Stoke City show that they had a good amount of possession and chances, but were unable to create any significant threats and xT in and around the opposition box. Ben Wilmot had the highest xT generation from passing for them. Other than Ben Wilmot, Tommy Smith and Nick Powell also had high xT creation from passing for their team. Nick Powell also had the joint highest xT creation from dribbling for The Potters along with Joe Allen. Sheff Utd had to contest a large number of defensive duels in the match, both in their own half and the oppositions half as well. John Egan won three defensive duels for The Blades. There were only a few aerial duels to be contested in the match for Sheffield United and they were able to win a decent amount of these duels. Gibbs-White won four aerial duels for his team. Most of the loose ball duels contested by The Blades came in their attacking third with only a few in midfield and defence.  Ben Davies and Jayden Bogle both won three loose balls each for their team. Stoke City players had to contest most of their defensive duels in their own half, especially on the left side of the defence. James Chester and Joe Allen both won four defensive duels each for The Potters. As mentioned earlier, there were not many aerial duels to be contested in the match, as most of the football was played along the ground. Out of the few, Jacob Brown won four aerial duels, while Chester and Allen won three each. Stoke City had to contest in almost all the loose ball duels in their own defensive third. Nick Powell made five loose ball recoveries for the team, while Romaine Sawyers won four loose balls.

Slavisa Jokanovic will; be happy with Sheffield United’s performance, as, after a poor start to the season, they have started to climb up the table and have moved up to 13th. On the other hand, Michael O’Neill will be unhappy with The Potters’ performance as they look to challenge for one of the top two spots. The defeat keeps them at 5th, four points behind second-placed West Brom and seven behind leaders Bournemouth.
