The door is open for Billy Gilmour to rejoin Rangers

Are Rangers genuinely close to a deal for Billy Gilmour?

We have to say we’re hearing this story over and over again today, and we salivate at the gills over him and John Lundstram in the middle of the park for Rangers next season.

In his favour is the reality that he’s not part of Thomas Tuchel’s plans – these days, if you go out on loan, you’re not a priority, even if you do well. Look at Jesse Lingard – criticised by all at Utd, went out to West Ham and was lauded for top class displays, returned to Utd and was unused, unwanted, and criticised again.

Loans are a polite way for a manager to say they’re not interested, generally speaking, and that gives Rangers a strong chance to get a star like Gilmour.

Can it be done?

Yes it can. Will it be done?

We couldn’t tell you.

We hope so, like most of you do – this lad is one of ours and he’s a remarkable talent, wasting away at a Chelsea who aren’t interested. He was a Conte signing (well, the youth regime back in those days anyway) and Tuchel doesn’t care – he’s said as much:

“We thought it was important [for him to get minutes] if you decide to on loan, it is as simple as that and I don’t mean it harsh, you need to perform on the pitch if you want to make it back here.”

So the door is most certainly open for Gilmour to come home, and we can honestly say we’d welcome him with open arms.

We’d despair of any Rangers fan who wouldn’t.
