There’s currently no favourite in the race for Liam Delap who’s widely expected to leave Ipswich this summer according to David Ornstein.

Chelsea are set for another busy summer and could fund their business by selling as many as seven or eight players.

The Blues face a critical window as they look to sign a striker, centre back and right footed attacker to improve Enzo Maresca’s squad.

No favourite for Delap

The Blues failed to sign a striker over the last two windows and have paid the price for not having a viable alternative to Nicolas Jackson.

A striker is said to be the main priority this summer and Chelsea have been linked with the likes of Benjamin Sesko and Hugo Ekitike.

The strongest links have been with Delap who’s got a release clause of £30m if Ipswich get relegated, making him an attractive proposition for a number of clubs.

It’s been reported that it’s between the Blues and Manchester United for the 22-year-old and Ornstein has now provided an update on the situation.

“No favourite yet,” he told The Athletic.

“He will assess all of the many options and consider what level he wants to take his next step at.

“I suspect he’ll then whittle it down to a small number of candidates and make a decision before the U21 Euros.

“We know the contenders – including Ipswich, by the way and the destination will become apparent over the next month or so.”

Delap has impressed in his debut Premier League season, scoring 12 goals to date in a struggling Ipswich side after joining from Manchester City for £20m last summer.

Maresca knows the striker well having worked with him as the City academy and the Italian has publicly praised Delap on a number of occasions this season.

Delap would certainly improve Chelsea, with his profile exactly what the Blues are missing in their squad, but it appears the race is very competitive, and if the club were to miss out it will be interesting to see who they turn to.
